Since the inception of the OMSRS, the minority student population of KSU has increased from 15% to 21% of the entire student population. It is my firm belief that the support and programs offered by OMSRS have played a significant role in these growing numbers. OMSRS was founded initially by faculty in response to the low enrollment of minority students at KSU. Today OMSRS still exists to provide minority students the support needed to complete your educational experience at KSU. Providing services such as the Minority Advising Program (MAP), Cultural Awareness Resource Center, Peer Mentoring, Tutoring, and coordinating scholarship information allows us to do just that! The Cultural Awareness Resource Center provides invaluable service to the entire campus community. We take great pride in fostering an environment where all students, regardless of differences, can come together to engage in supplemental opportunities for academic success such as our tutoring services, ITC lab, art display, and audio and visual resources, which can be checked out at any time. The African American Student Alliance is the premier student organization whose leadership works in direct liaison with the Office of Minority Student Retention Services. The executive officers and committed members of this outstanding group of students spend an immeasurable amount of time and energy planning events that enhance the quality of life for all students at KSU. Among many significant undertakings, this student group has successfully organized the campus' Black History Celebration for over 20 years each spring semester! As their efforts grow, so does the awareness and celebration of differences at KSU. Since my arrival to campus, I am amazed at the openness of the people here. At first glance, KSU is one of the most welcoming higher education institutions I've encountered in a while. It is reassuring to know that there are others who are different than me who are just as significantly invested in the success of minority students as our office is. As such, OMSRS is committed to engaging in active partnerships that promote academic success for all students. Whether you choose to live on campus, enroll in KSU 1101, or participate in Orientation (all of which we highly recommend), rest assured that OMSRS actively supports all of these, and other services that prove essential to the successful completion of your undergraduate experience. If you have decided to come to KSU, then we are excited that you're here, and look forward to being your partners in the pursuit of your academic success! If you are considering KSU and have questions, the Office of Minority Student Retention Services welcomes your questions and hopes that you will join us here! Sincerely, Nicole A. Phillips |
