Important Notes to Students:

  • Don't forget to come by the VKSU office to pick up your Service Verification Form.
  • Agency contact info will be provided with your Service Verification Form.
  • Students must then contact agency directly for days/times of volunteering availability.
  • Most agencies that deal directly with people on a one-on-one basis require a background check.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at your place of employment.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at any religious institution.

Animals

Cherokee County Animal Shelter

 

Canton An animal shelter promoting prevention of cruel treatment of animals and humane education. Volunteers needed for caring for the animals, sweeping, mopping, folding laundry, and some yard work.

Hours & Requirement:

      • Tuesday - Saturday
      • 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
      • Complete an application/waiver
Cherokee County Humane Society Acworth Two opportunities are available:
  • Thrift Store - Sort clothing, assist customers, tag items, and maintain the cats that reside in the store. For the cats, you will clean, feed & water, and socialize with them.
    • Hours:
    • Monday - Saturday (9:30 am - 6:00 pm)
    • Sunday (10:30 am - 5:00 pm)
    • Cats only - 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
  • Pet Adoptions - help set up cages, walk dogs, feed & water, socialize with the animals, and assist adoptees. Adoptions are held at Petsmart.

Georgia Animal Project Ball Ground This agency sponsors low-cost medical and spay/neuter clinics. Opportunities are available in the following areas: customer service, website development, data entry, scheduling, animal handling, cleaning, and fundraising projects.

Requirements:

  • Arrive 30 minutes early on your first day of service for orientation!
  • Follow dress code that will be given to you when you schedule your time to volunteer
  • Must volunteer a half-day or full day of service!

Hours:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Homeward Bound Pet Rescue Canton Volunteers will unload the crates and set them up, walk the dogs, water/feed them, clean the cages, and speak to potential adopters about the animals. Agency operates out of the Petsmart location!

Hours:

      • Some Sundays
      • 11:30 am - 5:00 pm
Iron Gait Percherons, Inc. Waleska IGP rescues horses from abuse, neglect, abandonment, slaughter, or victims of the economy, refurbishes all their medical, nutrional, and emotional needs, retrains them for new careers, and finds them safe, loving forever homes. Volunteers will help with the daily care of the horses (grooming, feeding, etc.) and facilities, help with marketing, assistance with community outreach, and other duties based upon horse related skills and experience.

Hours & Requirement:

  • New volunteers must attend an orientation that can be arranged at anytime!
  • Need volunteers 7 days a week!
  • 10:00 am - 8:00 pm (pending weather)

Arts & Exhibits

Children's PEACE Center Acworth Volunteers are needed for a number of programs, including puppeteers/play directors, peace guides, peace instructors, camp counselors, marketing coordinators, development/fundraising coordinators, grant writers, financial planners, educators-in-training to develop lesson plans, writers, graphic designers, artists, clerical/data entry, administrative assistants, webmasters, and individuals to maintain their Facebook page.

General Information:

  • Background check required - volunteer needs to get. No check is required for Special Events!
  • Training (1-2 hours) and orientation (1 hour) required - held when volunteers are available.
  • Volunteers must volunteer minimum of 2 hours for regular volunteering and 8 hours for a camp.

Causes

Cherokee Family Violence Center Canton The Cherokee Family Violence Center is a non-profit organization located in Canton, GA, that provides services to clients, mainly women and their children, who are victims of domestic violence.

Important Information:

  • Agency will complete background check
  • Attend an orientation & training session that is held at various times
  • Some assignments require volunteers to get a TB test (agency will assist)
  • Need volunteers seven (7) days a week
  • 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
  • Service hours will be determined by assignment!
Goodwill of North Georgia Woodstock
Duties include the following:
  • Placement Call Specialist - contact particpants to document the progress they've made with the job search.
  • Computer Support Assistant - format resumes, covers letters, search online, and fax/copy documents.
  • Class Instructor - teach basic skills classes, including basic computers, how to upload resumes, and other job skills and search courses.
  • Assist with special projects like job fairs and job research projects.
  • Special need for volunteers that speak Spanish.

General Information:

  • Background check by the agency
  • All volunteers must complete a drug screen provide by the agency!
  • Service hours will vary by assignment and center hours!
MUST Ministries Canton Volunteers are needed to help with administrative needs, serve as translators, assist with education and employment assistance for adults, and serve in the clothing closet.

Requirements:

  • Attend orientation that is held on Thursdays from 11am - Noon
  • Complete confidentiality training if working directly with the clients

Hours:

      • Monday - Friday
      • 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Salvation Army Canton Volunteers are needed to assist in the warehouse. Duties include the following: receiving donations, sorting, cleaning, possibly pricing donations, stocking the store, learning the system of rotating items, and other duties as assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator.

Service Hours:

  • Monday - Saturday
  • 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
  • Must volunteer at least eight (8) hours of service or more!
  • Special projects can be created for volunteers that need less than eight (8) hours of service!
United Way in Cobb & Cherokee
No volunteers needed at this time.
Marietta Volunteers needed to work on various special projects that are scheduleed to take place in the Cobb and Cherokee County areas.

Elderly Care, Disabled, Hospice

BEATS, Inc. Canton Therapeutic riding program designed for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities. More Information
Cherokee Day Training Center Canton Training and support services for adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteers will assist staff with recreational activities and other assigned training tasks.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 or older
  • Background check by agency is required
  • Must attend an orientation

Hours:

      • Monday - Friday
      • 10:00 am - 4:00
Cherokee County Senior Service Cherokee County Volunteers are needed for the following two opportunities:
  • Meals-On-Wheels - delievier meals to homebound seniors living in Cherokee County.
    • You can volunteer as little as three (3) hours a week!
    • Must use your own transportation, but mileage reimbursement is available!
  • Congregate Program - call bingo, teach a craft, help serve lunch, and socialize with the seniors.
    • This program meets each week day!
Dreampower Therapeutic Equestrian Center

 

Canton Equestrian program for physically and mentally challenged children and adults. Volunteers are needed to assist riders and lead the horses during therapy sessions.

Requirements:

    • Sign a volunter waiver
    • Attend an orientatation
    • Hours will vary by assignment!
Gentiva Hospice Cherokee
End of life hospice care - visit patients and assist families with various needs!

Important Information:

  • Flexible volunteering times: evenings, weekdays, and weekends.
  • Background check required - agency will do.
  • TB test required - agency will assist
  • 3-hour training required, then additional as needed.

Volunteers serve by visiting patients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and homes. Volunteers provide encouragement through listening, companionship, and giving patients the opportunity to talk about what is important to them. More Information
Transitions Hospice Care Cherokee
Work with hospice patients, family members, and staff members through direct care, running errands, reading, housework, or clerical/administrative support.

Important Information:

  • Several locations in 21 counties in North Georgia area!!!
  • Volunteers can choose location, time, and days to volunteer.
  • Background check by agency
  • TB skin test required - agency will assist
  • Orientation held at convenience of volunteer. 
Vistacare Hospice Marietta Smyrna Kennesaw Vinings Provides care for those who are terminally ill. Volunteers provide companionship support and can also provide administrative support.

Important Information:

  • Minimum length of service is four (4) hours per month
  • Hours: 10 am - 4 pm on Monday - Sunday
  • Agency runs background check
  • Orientations held every 6-8 weeks on a Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm.
  • Orientation is required and held on an individual basis and dependent on the volunteers schedule. 
Woodstock Nursing & Rehab Woodstock Assist residents living in an assisted living home by reading, sitting, socializing, playing games, or cleaning.

Requirement:

  • New volunteers must attend an orientation that is scheduled around the volunteer's schedule!


Homeless & Shelters

Habitat for Humanity 
North Central Georgia
Canton Volunteers are needed to stock shelves, move furniture, clean donations, set up displays, and assist customers at the Habitat ReStore. They are not currently accepting volunteers to assist with builds.

ReStore Hours:

    • Tuesday - Friday
      • 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

      • 9:00 am - 3:00 pm


Mentoring/Tutoring Activities - Adults

Cherokee Learning Center

Canton Offers adult literacy programs including GED test preparation, GED testing, basic math and English skills, reading skills, ESL, computer skills, typing skills, and job and life skills. More Information

Mentoring/Tutoring Activities - Children

Boys & Girls Club - Cherokee Canton Youth guidance organization for kids 6-12 years. Open after school and during the summer to give youth a positive place to receive education help and recreational activities. Help build children's self-esteem and self worth by providing fun activities with a purpose.

Requirements:

  • Complete a volunteer application and waiver form
  • Once your background check has been completed then you can schedule an orientation with the Director.

Hours:

      • Monday - Friday
      • 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Cherokee Charter Academy

 

Canton CCA serves students in grades K-8. Volunteers would tutor one-on-one or small groups of students in math or langauge arts instructions. Volunteers would also be responsible for keeping attendance and managing responsible behavior within the groups.

General Information:

  • Monday - Thursday
  • 2:45 pm until 4:30 pm
  • Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 10 days of service during the semester.
Cherokee County Foster Parent Association Canton Volunteers are needed to assist with respite care events for foster children. Respite care is defined as giving a caretaker a break from their everyday routine so they can do what they want to do on their own time. Volunteers are also needed to assist with special events and fundraisers. Special events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open. Events are typically on Saturdays!
Feed My Lambs Canton Mission of FML is to empower at-risk children academically, physically and socially; to impact families and communities.

Requirements:

  • Orientation is required and determined by the School Director!
  • Volunteer is responsible for getting the background check completed!

Hours:

      • Monday - Friday
      • 8:30 am - 1:30 pm
Path to Shine 

Canton Volunteers are needed to serve as a tutor/mentor for children in an after-school program during the school year and summer camp during the summer semester. You will be outside and around children, so please dress appropriately! No shorts, tank tops, or open-toe shoes allowed.

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must complete child abuse training and attend an orientation.
  • Volunteers are also responsible for covering the less than $10 background check!!!
  • You must make a commitment to stay with the program for an entire semester!!!
