  • Most agencies that deal directly with people on a one-on-one basis require a background check.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at your place of employment.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at any religious institution.

  • American Heart Association Marietta Need volunteers to answer the switchboard, greet visitors, file, and create and/or edit reports using Word or Excel.

    Volunteer Information:

    Camp Gideon Acworth Volunteers are needed to help with various office tasks - data entry, filing, assisting with bulk mailings, etc.

    Caribbean Lifetime Missions Acworth Volunteers are needed to complete the following administrative duties: filing, data entry, creating reports, answering the phones, and other various duties as determined by the Volunteer Coordinator.

    Celebrate Life International Kennesaw Looking for volunteers to help with various clerical duties, contact people regarding the agency, and assist with media needs.

    Requirements:

    • Must complete a background check - by agency!
    • Orientation is required - held on various dates
    • Minimum length of service = four (4) hour shift
    • Must be 19 years or older to volunteer!!

    Cobb County Public Library Cobb County Assist with shelving, customer support, filing, and special projects. There are 16 branches in Cobb County, but not all of them accept volunteers! Branch hours vary according to location.

    Requirements

    • Complete county forms and volunteer application that is located on the Library website
    • Complete a background check - Cobb County will conduct the check!
    • Orientation is required - some locations handle them on individual basis and others in small groups
    Cobb & Douglas Community Service Board Austell / Lithia Springs area Volunteers are needed to do administrative work - filing, scheduling appointments, data input, Excel spreadsheets, etc. 

    Requirements:

    • Orientation is required - held at various times.
    • Regular volunteers must complete a background check - agency does.
    • Some assignment require a TB test and drug screen. Agency will provide the drug screen but volunteer is responsible for getting TB test.
    Cobb & Douglas Public Health Marietta Smyrna Acworth Need volunteers for the Bi-Annual Customer Satisfaction Survey from March 24 until May 2.

    Two Options:

    • Kiosk Volunteers - volunteers will be responsible for assisting clients with completing a short survey and/or providing the clients with a link to the website to take the survey. Requirements include: basic computer skills; excellent customer service skills; some knowledge of SurveyMonkey would be great; and Spanish speaking is a plus!

    Cobb Mentoring Matters Austell Need assistance with putting a newsletter together that can be placed on their website. Agency will provide photos and other news worthy information that can be added.

    Destiny's Daughter of Promise Kennesaw The mission of Destiny's Daughters of Promise is to foster independence, encourage leadership, and provide educational training and mentoring for young women in order to help prepare them for a succcessful future.

    Georgia Alliance to End Homelessness Marietta GAEH helps people identify and obtain permanent and transitional housing, emergency shelter, employment, and find education necessary to become self sufficient. GAEH is not a homeless shelter! Currently need volunteers that will conduct phone surveys; answer phones, some research, and data entry.

    Requirements:

    • Complete an application and interview
    • Background check by agency
    • Orientation is held the 1st day of service
    • Minimum length of service is 2 hour shift for 2 days a week and agree to volunteer for 2.5 to 3 months of service

    Girls Scouts of Greater Atlanta Acworth Looking for a web savy person to serve as a web manager for an existing website.

    General Information:

    • This is a virtual opportunity, but volunteers will be required to meet once a month in the Acworth area.
    kidz2leaders, Inc. Marietta kidz2leaders, inc. exists to help change the lives of prisoners’ children and to break the vicious cycle of incarceration. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of different administrative needs, and assist with monthly or bi-monthly fundraising events.

    Second Wind Dreams Marietta The mission of Second Wind Dreams is simple -- to change the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams and the offering of innovative educational opportunities to caregivers and communities.

    Agency currently has two options available:

    Option #1

    • Assist with putting together virtual Dementia Tour kits. Proceeds from the kits help make dreams come true for elders living in long-term care.

  • Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption Smyrna Volunteers are needed to work in the Shelter/Adoption Center. Volunteer duties include: cleaning, walking dogs, bathing/grooming, and socializing with the animals. The shelter is open seven days a week from 6:00 am - 9:00 pm.

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Complete an application
    • A $10 application fee is required which you will pay once you attend an orientation session
    • Orientations are offered twice a month at different times
    • Note: No volunteer hours given for fostering pets.
    Cherokee County Humane Society Marietta Two opportunities to volunteer:
    • Cat Center - Looking for volunteers to work in the cat adoption center. Volunteers will clean cages and socialize with the cats. Cat Center is located at Petco.

    • Pet Adoptions - help set up cages, walk dogs, feed & water, socialize with the animals, and assist adoptees. Adoptions are held at Petsmart.

    Cobb County Humane Society Marietta Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning, feeding/watering, walking, medicating, bathing, assisting the public with finding animals to adopt, and socializing with the animals.

    Requirements & Hours:

    • Orientation is required and lasts about 45 minutes - held once a month on Saturday mornings at 10am (dates fluctuate month to month)
    • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays from 10am - 2pm
    • Saturday from 9:30am - 1pm
    Etowah Valley Humane Society Acworth Volunteers are needed to clean litter boxes, feed and water the cats, socialize with the animals, and assist potential adoptees.

    Requirements & Hours:

    • Volunteers must visit the site and meet with the Volunteer Coordinator prior to volunteering

    Fancy Feline Rescue of the South Powder Springs Kennesaw No-kill cat rescue organization with two volunteer options:
    • Shelter - volunteers are needed to assist at the main shelter (Powder Springs) with the general care of the cats - giving food, water, scooping litter boxes, etc.

    Georgia Canine Companions for Independence Various Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Volunteers are only needed to assist with special events that are scheduled throughout the year.     Georgia Homeless Pets Austell

    Two opportunities are open:
    • Cat Room Volunteer - feed/water the cats, scoop litter boxes, and socialize with the cats.

  • Cobb Youth Museum Marietta A nonprofit educational resource center offering children the opportunity to learn about significant historical, social and cultural events. Volunteers needed to assist with instructional activities combining art and education while emphasizing personal involvement and participation.

    • Volunteers typically work a three (3) hour shift from 10am to 1pm and/or 1pm to 4pm once a week or once every other week.
    Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art Marietta Assist in introducing visitors to the visual arts through a diversity of visual art experiences, educational services, and outreach activities. Duties include: being the admissions desk fill-in, assisting with tours/classes, and special events.

    The Southern Museum Kennesaw Volunteer duties are dependent upon the museum department where the individual is assigned to volunteer. Duties could include the following: serving as a museum docent, gift shop assistant, educational program assistant, and working special events. Special Events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open for volunteers!

    Important Information:

    • Background check will be conducted by Kennesaw City Hall!
    • Must pass a drug screen that is provided by the agency.
    • Must volunteer a minimum of forty (40) hours every year!
    • Typically need volunteers on a regular basis (one day a week for 4-5 hours)

  • Books for Africa Smyrna Books for Africa provides books and educational supplies to children and students in Africa. They utilize book donations from individuals, schools, organizations, and publishers to send to Africa. Volunteers are asked to dress comfortably; jeans and sneakers (no open toe shoes) are fine.

    Cobb County Juvenile Court - CASA Marietta Once a volunteer completes the training program, he/she will investigate cases involving children who are abused, neglected and deprived. The volunteer will also make a recommendation to the Juvenile Court Judge as to what he/she believes, based on the information collected, is in the best interest of the child.

    Requirements:

    • Must be 21 years of older
    • Complete an interview, background check, and orientation
    • Successfully complete a 30+ hour training course (held at various times during the year!)
    • Commit to 18+ months of service
    Cobb County Juvenile Court - Judicial Citizen Review Panel Marietta The Cobb County Juvenile Court's Judicial Citizen Panel Review Program is a dynamic, volunteer supported program, that is tasked with reviewing foster care cases. If you have a desire to extend a helping hand to Cobb County's desperate, maltreated children, can think analytically and enjoy working with a cohort of other volunteers, then you may be an ideal candidate.

    Requirements:

    • Must commit to volunteer once a month for approximately 3 hours for 12 months.
    • Background check required - agency does.
    • Orientation required - held twice a years, late fall and early spring.
    Cobb Pregnancy Resource Center Kennesaw Volunteers are needed to work with donations, perform a variety of different clerical tasks, assist clients with various needs, work in the Baby Boutique area, and assist with fundraiser as needed.

    • Special training is required if working directly with clients!

Looking for volunteers to serve in the warehouse counting and sorting food donations. Duties include: sorting through bins of food donations, marking food with expiration dates and counting donations.

    Volunteers will help greet and assist donors and customers, sort donated items, stock the store, and keep the store looking organized and clean.

    Becca's Closet Marietta Becca's Closet collects and distributes formal dresses to girls so that they can attend special school events such as prom, homecoming, and military balls.Volunteers are needed to serve as personal shoppers for girls in need. Volunteers will help the girls find a dress that fits them and rack new donations. Many times the agency also needs help with the upkeep of the house such as cleaning, mowing the yard, and raking leaves.

    MUST Ministries - Donation Center Kennesaw This donation center acts as a distribution point for all of the MUST Program Services, the Emergency Shelter and other housing facilities, as well as the MUST Administration. Volunteers will be responsible for sorting clothing and/or food, and packing them for distribution to the various centers.

    Sweetwater Mission was OFH Clothing for a Cause Powder Springs Volunteers will sort and price donations (clothes, accessories, and furniture), help customers on the sales floor, run the cash register, and box clothes for the homeless. The proceeds that are collected from the sales at the thrift store help feed the homeless.

    Hands on Atlanta - Discovery Program Metro Atlanta Saturday tutoring and enrichment program. The Discovery Program reinforces weekday learning through academic assistance, educational games, service-learning projects, and other enrichment activties. Students are engaged in a variety of subjects depending on the needs of their particular schools.

    Requirements:

    • Meets twice a month at designated school
    • 10:00 am - Noon
    • Must complete a sexual registery check by the agency
    • Commit to a minimum of two (2) Saturdays a month!

    Junior Achievement of Georgia Metro Atlanta Help in providing services to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, understand business and economics and be workforce ready. Kindergarten through 6th grade students are involved with learning economic concepts which are presented in a series of 7 themes. Opportunities available throughout the Metro Atlanta area. Opportunities are also available to assist with the Discovery Day that is held at the GA World Congress Center!

    Requirement:

    • Get a background check (EDUC 2120 background checks will be accepted)
    • Attend an orientation/training session
    • Minimum lenght of service = 1 hr lesson at a local school once a week for 5 weeks + training
    • No time commitment is required for the Discovery Days and no training is required.

    Kids Enabled Marietta at Brumby Elementary School Kids Enabled is a not-for-profit organization which offers guiding information, support and encouragement to parents and support networks to navigate the complicated journey from awareness to success, thus enabling children with learning differences to reach their full potential. Students are needed to provide one-on-one support to elementary school students with learning differences.

    Kidz2Leaders, Inc. Marietta kidz2leaders, inc. exists to help change the lives of prisoners’ children and to break the vicious cycle of incarceration. Volunteers are needed to assist with Camp Hope that is held during the month of July and supervise children as needed for special field trips and retreats.
    Kutz4Kids, Inc. (K4K) Cobb County area Volunteers are needed to help make a difference in the lives of children through special events, summer activities, and Side-Kick Mentoring program. All program activities will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when they are open for volunteers!

    L.E.A.D. Metro Atlanta L.E.A.D. connects with at-risk youth by using baseball as common ground. Through the Human Enrichment program, they provide tutoring, time management, and goal setting courses.

    Lockheed Elementary school Marietta Lockheed Elementary School Leadership Academy is a Title I public school in the Marietta City Schools district. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: media center support, classroom support, serve as interpreters for parent/teacher conferences, assist with math fairs and other school wide events when they are schedule.

    Passion For Life, Inc. Acworth Mableton Austell Passion for Life is a four year career and life coaching program that encourages and guides at-risk high school students to pursue their passions and turn them into careers. P4L is currently looking for career coaches to share their passions, experiences, and successes while the students gain direct education, receives hands on experiences, and becomes empowered to work towards their life's passion.

    Requirements:

    • Orientation & Special Training is required
    • Must be 21 years or older to volunteer
    • 1 year committment but are willing to work with varying time committments!

    Smyrna & Marietta or Austell Volunteers are needed to serve as a tutor/mentor for children in an after-school program during the school year and summer camp during the summer semester. You will be outside and around children, so please dress appropriately! No shorts, tank tops, or open-toe shoes allowed.

    Requirements:

    • Volunteers must complete child abuse training and attend an orientation.
    • Volunteers are also responsible for covering the less than $10 background check!!!
    • You must make a commitment to stay with the program for an entire semester!!!

    The Salvation Army Marietta Volunteers are needed for the after-school program that serves children grades K-8 with their homework, arts & crafts, or reading, etc.

    • All volunteers must complete a background check as well as a Safe From Harm training program. Agency will complete both requirements.
    • It can take a few weeks to get approved!
    The Sheltering Arms Various Metro Atlanta Locations Volunteers assist teachers in the classroom, provide children one-on-one attention as they participate in learning activities, and read to children. By giving a young child your undivided attention, you help them to see the connection between block building and math, between feeding fish and science, between hearing a story and learning to read.

    • Reach & Rise Therapeutic Mentoring Program
    • Mentor children ages 6-17 struggling with issues at home, school, bullying, anxiety, etc.
    • Mentor and mentees may use the YMCA facility for meetings.
    • Requirements:
      • Must be 23 years old!
      • Mentor child for 1 - 3 hours per week for one (1) year!
      • Complete a background check, attend an orientation, and complete a fifteen (15) hour training course.
    YWCA of Northwest Georgia Marietta Looking for volunteers for the following program area:
    • Children's Program Group Support - supervise children while their mother is attending group sessions
