  • Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Atlanta Volunteers are needed greet and welcome families and visitors, register families, answer telephone, help keep kitchen and public areas organized, assist volunteer groups with the evening meal, provide home-cooked meals for families.

    General Information:

    • Submit an application & pass a criminal background check
    • Agree to volunteer for at least six (6) months; subject to their needs!
    • Attend an orientation & training session
    • Complete any extra training that may be required for your job assignment!
    • Agency receives more applications than they have volunteer positions available!
    Be The Match Decatur Be The Match recruits individuals to become possible marrow donors. Currently looking for volunteers to assist with various office support duties - grant research, event planning, swab kit preparation, etc.

    disABILITY LINK Decatur Non-profit organization run by and for people with disabilities. Focuses on four core areas: peer support, independent living skills training, inforamtion and referrals, and advocacy. Opportunities include, but not limited to: filing, cleaning, copying, shredding, answering phones, making phone calls for surveys/outreach folding brochures, mailings, and data entry.

    Requirements:

    • Orientation is required - held on a monthly basis
    • Special training is required; if needed!

    Global Health Action Decatur The mission of Global Health Action is to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities in under-served parts of the world through community-based health programs and livelihood opportunities.


    Volunteers are needed to assist with the following office related duties:

    • Serve as a translator - French & Chinese

    Requirements:

    National Multiple Sclerosis Society Atlanta Office volunteers are needed - answer phones, clerical type work, etc. Volunteers are also needed to assist with special events. Special Events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open for volunteers.

    The Chelsea Foundation, Inc. Metro Atlanta area Looking for someone who is well versed in social media and would like to use The Chelsea Foundation as their method of jump starting a career. Must be savy in all forms of social media!

    Requirements:

    • Orientation is required - held based on volunteers available time!
    • Minimum length of service = 1 semester

  • Atlanta Animal Alliance Atlanta Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning, feeding/watering, walking, and socializing with the animals. New volunteers must attend an orientaion that is held once a month at the Animal Welfare Center in Doraville. New volunteers must complete an online application that is available on the website.
    Furkids Doraville Tucker Two opportunities open:
    • Shelter - clean cages, feed & water the animals, socialize with the animals, clean the shelter area, etc.
      • Hours:
      • Monday - Saturday
      • 10am - Noon / 2pm - 4pm
      • Orientation is required to assist at the shelter and held on Saturday at 10:00 am!
    • Pet Adoptions/Adoption Center - help set up cages, walk dogs, feed & water, socialize with the animals, and assist adoptees. Adoptions are held at Petsmart.

    Georgia Canine Companions for Independence Various Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Volunteers are only needed to assist with special events that are scheduled throughout the year. Events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open for volunteers.
    LifeLine Animal Project Avondale Estates Volunteers are needed in the following areas: caring for the animals in the Dog House and Kitty Motel, Spay & Neuter Clinic, Pet Adoptions at local shelters, Transporting, Construction/Painting/Landscaping, and Administrative type work.

    Important Information:

    • Orientation is held once a month!
      • Typically the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month!

  • Causes
  • Atlanta Parent Magazine Atlanta Volunteers help with special projects scheduled by the magazine. Special events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open for volunteers.
    Chris Kids, Inc. Atlanta A volunteer organization that provides services to children and families, including assisting children that are emotionally and physically abused; transitioning from foster homes to independent living; and helping to preserve families by providing them with resources. Volunteer is responsible for completing the background check and must attend an orientation!
    Goodwill of North Georgia Atlanta Decatur
    Duties include the following:
    • Placement Call Specialist - contact particpants to document the progress they've made with the job search.
    • Computer Support Assistant - format resumes, covers letters, search online, and fax/copy documents.
    • Class Instructor - teach basic skills classes, including basic computers, how to upload resumes, and other job skills and search courses.
    • Assist with special projects like job fairs and job research projects.
    • Special need for volunteers that speak Spanish.

    Jerusalem House Atlanta Need volunters to work in a variety of different areas that range from: child mentoring, clothes closet coordinator, gardener, general volunteer, hospitality volunteer, house assistant, home improvements, one-on-one partner, transportation, childcare services, serving as a tutor to a child or adult, and providing office support. Days and times of service will vary according to the volunteer assignment.

    Requirements:

    • Complete a background check that the agency will provide!
    • Attend an orientation that are held in a group setting bi-monthly and can be viewed on the website.
    • Volunteers must be in good health standing due to some of the conditions of the clients.
    Men Stopping Violence Decatur Offers a 24-week class for men who have been abusive to their female partners and want to work to change. Also trains professionals in working with men who batter and educates community groups about domestic violence. Looking for long-term or ongoing volunteers! Orientation is required - involves watching a video and having a discussion about the work and the expectations!
    Pregnancy Resources of Doraville Doraville Students have the option to determine in what area of the agency that they would like to volunteer. Areas from which to choose are the following: administration, stork-basket management, event planning, publicity/PR, grant writing/research, and client mentor.

    Second Life Thrift Store Avondale Estates Second Life is an upscale thrift store that was created with the mission of giving homeless pets a second chance at life. Money collected from the store is used to support animal rescue charities and programs. Volunteer duties include the following: sorting donations, displaying items, organizing the back room, creating displays, testing electronics, and assisting customers.

  • A.G. Rhodes Home Atlanta Long-term nursing home that needs volunteers to participate in different activities, including playing cards, playing board games, book clubs, and scrapbooking.

    Guardian Hospice Atlanta Volunteers are needed to provide companionship and/or make friendly visits to clients who are utilizing the services of this agency. Visits can include reading to the clients, assisting with light housework, playing games, and/or creating arts and crafts.

    Senior Connections Chamblee Help seniors "age in place" in the comfort of their own homes. Needs are to deliver meals to homebound seniors, preparing and packaging meals, administrative and kitchen assistance, activity coordinators.

  • Chattahoochee Riverkeeper DeKalb County Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper provides a number of different volunteer opportunities for people interested in helping to preserve the Chattahoochee River and its watershed through programs in education, community outreach, policy reform, and legal actions. From working all day at a festival or assisting with river clean-ups, there's something available for everyone's skill level, interest and physical ability.     Georgia Organics Decatur & Stone Mountain Volunteers are needed for two opportunities:
    • Office - need volunteers to help staff the front office and perform general office related duties.

  • Be The Match Decatur Be The Match recruits individuals to become possible marrow donors. Currently looking for volunteers to serve as a Volunteer Ambassador or Drive Assistant! This involves coordinating the actual bone marrow drives and assisting the day of the event.

    Requirements:

    • Volunteer Ambassadors will be required to complete a background check that the agency will conduct!
    • Drive Assistants are not required to get a background check!

    Blaze Sports Atlanta This organization delivers programs and services to youth and adults living with a disability. Volunteers help in organizing sports events, teaching sports skills, and organizing physical activites. Hours will vary by event!

    Requirements:

    • Minimum length of service is 100 hours per year! A minimum of 1 year and they would prefer a longer commitment!

    Feminist Women's Health Center Atlanta Volunteers will assist in a variety of roles in office support, community outreach, advocacy, and specific educational programs, including, but not limited to: computer work, staffing tables at events, participating in organizing events and activities, etc.

    Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition (GPAN)Cooking Matters Stone Mountain Cooking Matters collaborative program model connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that show adults, teens, and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe, and tasty ways. This can mean the difference between feeding families for just one night and making sure they have the knowledge, skills, and resources to prepare healthy meals for a lifetime.

    General Information:

    • Volunteers are needed to teach classes, serve as a class assistant, or help with non-teaching positions.
    • Monday-Friday from 10 am - 7 pm; Saturday hours vary!
    MedShare Decatur Volunteers will take medical supplies donated by hospitals or manufacturers and sort them into specific categories so they can be shipped to hospitals/clinics around the developing world.

    National Multiple Sclerosis Society - GA Chapter Atlanta Assist the fundraising department with promotion, organization and management of fundraising events such as the MS Walk and bike tours.     Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. Atlanta Volunteers are asked to complete clerical tasks and assist with special events. Special Events will be listed under the Dated Events section on the VKSU website when open.

  • Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS) Metro Atlanta CPACS offers health and social services to Asians and Pacific Islanders (API) in the greater-Atlanta area.

    Volunteer opportunities are available to assist with Youth Programs. Volunteers will serve as tutors/homework assistants at various locations in Dekalb, Fulton, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties.
    Volunteers opportunities to also enter data into the agency database, assist with administrative duties around the office, and work directly with the clients if possessing Asian language skills.

    Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Work with boys ages 7 to 18 on a variety of skills from outdoor to career interest to first aid, etc.

    Catholic Charities Chamblee Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to teaching English classes or training inmates in thoughful decision making, etc.

    Culture Connect Various cities in Metro Atlanta Become a mentor to an immigrant youth! You will be matched with a 7-17 year old of your same gender who comes from a similar cultural background and speaks the same home language as you. You will be a role model and trusted friend to a child in need, participating in various fun and educational activities as well as helping with school work and just hanging out. Note: You must commit to meeting with your mentee four (4) hours a month (scheduled around your convenience) for one year More Information
    Decatur Cooperative Ministry Decatur Volunteers will assist with homework, childcare, and help out in the computer lab. Volunteers are also needed the second weekend of the month to serve as the overnight host - more information provided as needed by the agency. 

    Important Information:

    • Background check is provided by the agency.
    • Orientation is required and usually held the third Mondays at 7 pm.
    • Minimum length of service is 4 months. The time can be divided into weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly commitment.

    Family Heritage Foundation Clarkston A volunteer organization that provides services to refugee families. Following opportunities are available:
    • After-School Tutor - assist children with homework, tutor children in math, science, social studies, or language arts.
      • Monday - Thursday
      • 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
    • Reading Teacher - perform reading assessments to determine their grade-level reading skills. Teach children reading using books and/or reading manipulatives. Select books and organize the reading library.
      • Monday - Thursday
      • 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
    • Chef Nutritionist - prepare and serve food to children in the after-school program. Plan weekly or monthly menus, buy ingredients or snacks, ensure the pantry is stocked.

    FOCUS Chamblee FOCUS understands and supports the unique needs of families with children who are medically fragile or have significant developmental or physical disabilities. Need individuals to assist with respite care for children who have been diagnosed with a variety of developmental delays and volunteer with the Teen & Adult Groups.

    Important Information:

    • Backround check is required and agency will complete!
    • Teen & Adult Group meets once a month on a Saturday for 1 or 2 hours
    • Respite Care meets once a month on a Saturday from 10am - 2pm
    Fugees Family Scottdale Fugees Family, Inc. is a non-profit organization devoted to working with child survivors of war. They build upon the power of soccer to galvanize these kids by giving them the support and structure they need to realize their potential. Their programming has grown to include year-round soccer for 86 boys aged 10-18, after-school tutoring, a private academy, and an academic enrichment camp.

    Requirements:

    • Complete a background check (Agency asks volunteers to donate $15 to cover the cost)
    • Must attend an orientation & complete an volunteer application
    • Commitment of one (1) evening a week for the duration of a semester

    Volunteers needed:

    Junior Achievement of Georgia Metro Atlanta Help in providing services to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, understand business and economics and be workforce ready. Kindergarten through 6th grade students are involved with learning economic concepts which are presented in a series of 7 themes. Opportunities available throughout the Metro Atlanta area. Opportunities are also available to assist with the Discovery Day that is held at the GA World Congress Center!

    Requirement:

    • Get a background check (EDUC 2120 background checks will be accepted)
    • Attend an orientation/training session
    • Minimum lenght of service = 1 hr lesson at a local school once a week for 5 weeks + training
    • No time commitment is required for the Discovery Days and no training is required.
    Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta Decatur Literacy program that teaches basic literacy or English for low-income children ages 4-13, enhancing their reading comprehension skills, as well as homework help as needed.

    General Information:

    • Attend an orientation session that is held each month
    • Must attend and complete 16-hour training program and pay small fee for tutor workbook and other materials
    • After training session and orientation you will be given a volunteer schedule!
    Little Debbie's Family Services, Inc. Decatur Provides residential care for troubled and homeless adolescent females between the ages of 15 and 18. Looking for trainer or tutors to help students in all academic areas to pass the GED test.

    Requirements:

    • Background check is required - volunteer will be required to pay!
    • Orientation is required - held first day of service or prior to service date at the main office in Decatur.

    Math Is My Friend, Inc. Stone Mountain Math Is My Friend, Inc. is a non-profit agency dedicated to providing math skills training to Elementary, Middle, and High School students. Our programs help students improve their Math scores on standardized tests and grades in Math.

    Afterschool Program Classroom Assistant

    • Work directly with refugee children in grades 1 -8 who have been in the US for less than 5 years.
    • Tutors help students complete their homework and improve reading and writing skills.
    • Tutors also assist the Classroom Supervisor in creating and implementing educational and social enrichment activities, including: sports, arts, multi-cultural education, etc.
    • Monday - Thursday
    • 2:45 pm - 5:45 pm
    • Commitment of 2 - 3 hours, one day a week, for one (1) semester!

    One to One Tutor

    • Work one-on-one with a refugee youth in grades 1 - 8 struggling with English or any language based subject.
    • Provided with a student evaluation and individually designed curriculum that introduces and reinforces core skills needed to succeed in school.

    • 2:45 pm - 5:45 pm
    • Commitment of two (2) hours, one day a week, for one (1) semester!

    • Orientation is required and held weekday afternoons, but sometimes on Saturday mornings!
    Soccer in the Streets Atlanta Soccer in the Streets empowers kids who lack opportunity by using soccer as a medium to make them employable adults. With their youngest participants, they teach basic life skills such as respect, communication, and teamwork in order to prepare them for success both on and off the field. Older participants take part in workshops and community projects that prepare them for the workforce and help them gain valuable work experience.

    Volunteers are needed in the field working directly with kids, typically weekdays after school hours, as well as in the office helping out with administrative tasks. Volunteers in the field will support trained staff in administering programming.

    • Orientation required - typically held each month.
    • Minimum length of service is one semester!
    The Hirsch Academy Decatur Special needs school for children ages 5-13 who have social, emotional, or learning challenges. Also provides therapeutic support in addition to the academic program.

    General Information:

    • Volunteers will assist in the special education classroom and therapeutic recreation program.

    • Volunteers must complete a background check, attend an orientation, and possibly receive some special training.
    The Sheltering Arms Various Metro Atlanta Locations Volunteers assist teachers in the classroom, provide children one-on-one attention as they participate in learning activities, and read to children. By giving a young child your undivided attention, you help them to see the connection between block building and math, between feeding fish and science, between hearing a story and learning to read.

    • Students must purchase the $52.00 fingerprint kit!

    YMCA - Bransby Outdoor Lithonia Need volunteers to work in a vareity of different outdoor programs that range from playing sports, horseback riding, and special events. Homework helpers are needed during the regular school year!

    YMCA - Cowart Family Dunwoody Volunteers needed for a number of programs, including office support, sport activities, mentoring, after-school and pre-school programs.

    YMCA South Dekalb in Decatur Need volunteers to work in the pre-school (children range in ages from birth up to 5 years old.) Opportunities include: assisting teachers, reading to students, helping with snack time, etc.
