VKSU has both dated events and on-going opportunities in many areas of interest. The dated events are outlined below. Please review and then come to the VKSU office (enter at Student Center room 267) to let us know where you would like to volunteer and to get your Service Verification Form. Policies that are Effective Summer 2012:

  • Volunteers must register with VKSU prior to volunteering for any volunteer assignment.
  • Volunteers can only volunteer at agencies and/or events that have been approved by VKSU prior to their start date. Agencies and/or events cannot be approved after you have you begun volunteering and/or completed your volunteer assignment. VKSU reserves the right to remove and/or add an agency and/or event at any time.
  • All VKSU hours must be documented on a VKSU Service Verification Form that you obtain from the VKSU office prior to your volunteer activity.
  • Letters, emails, faxes, and/or phone calls from the individual agencies will not be accepted.
  • VKSU will not award volunteer credit to any volunteer who fails to follow these policies and procedures!
  • You cannot have family members to serve as your site supervisor!

On-Campus Events

KSU Department of Culinary Services - KSU Campus
  • Farmers Market
  • Volunteers are needed to help set up the market and close down the market!
  • Every Thursday starting May 15 until August 7
  • Setup time - 3:00 pm- 4:30 pm
  • Close down time - 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm

SPECIAL SUMMER CAMPS & LONG-TERM ACTIVITIES
1 Little Meal - Kennesaw
  • Summer Food Service Program
  • Need volunteers to help prepare food that will be distributed to program partcipants. Volunteers are also needed to help transport and deliver the food to necessary partcipants. Transporters will use their own personal vehicle!
  • A background check is required and volunteer will be responsible for completing their own check through the Kennesaw Police Department! You must cover the cost of this check!
  • Orientation is required and will be conducted after the completition of the background check!
  • You must commit to the full 11 weeks of service (78 days to be exact)
  • Program starts on May 22, 2014 and ends on August 8, 2014!
Free Sprit Summer Day Camp - Fairburn, Georgia
  • This provides children with engaging leaning opportunities, stimulating activities, structure, safety, balanced meals and snacks throughout the day.
  • Background check is required and agency will complete!
  • Orientation and training is required and held after the completion of the background check.
  • Camps run from June 2, 2014 through August 1, 2014!
  • Must commit to at least one (1) full week of service!
Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art - Marietta
  • Summer Art Camp Teacher's Assistant
  • Teacher's Assistants will aid in the instruction of children ages 5-12, work with art projects and supplies, and will help prepare/clean up classrooms.
  • Agency will write a letter of recommendation for portfolio/future use after completing this program.
  • Camp is held during the month of July!
    • Monday - Friday
    • 8:30 am until 3:30 pm
  • Intrerested volunteers must sumbit a copy of a current resume and complete an interview prior to starting!
Refugee Family Services - Clarkston, Georgia
  • Summer Camp Classroom Assistant at Jolly Elementary School
  • Rufugee Family Services is supports the efforts of refugee women and children to achieve self-sufficiency in the United States by providing education and economic opportunity.
  • Volunteers will assist summer camp counselors in facilitating activities and classroom managment for a diverse group of refugee children. Duties include tutoring, chaperoning field trips, and helping with other camp logistics.
  • Volunteers must complete a background check that the agency will provide!
  • Orientation is required!
  • Must commit to volunteering four (4) hours a week for a minimum of two (2) months of service!

Off-Campus Events

Acworth Parks & Recreation - Acworth
  • Horizon Kickball League
  • Help children 13 years and older play kickball! Volunteers will serve as referees, keep scores, and assisted in areas as ncessary by the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Volunteers will be asked to arrive fifteen (15) minutes prior to the game time to be paried with your buddy!
  • Season starts on June 12 and ends on July 27 (6 Week Season)
  • Games are played every Thursday!
  • First game starts at 6:00 pm and the last game starts at 7:00 pm!
AIDS Walk - Atlanta
  • Office Assistant
  • Need volunteers to recruit walkers/runners over the phone for the Annual 2014 AIDS Walk.
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Program starts on June 17 and ends before the Walk on Sunday, October 19!
  • Volunteers will be provided with dinner and a chance to win a pair of tickets to Six Flags!
Alive Ministries, Inc. - Mableton
  • Food Pantry Assistant
  • Volunteers will assist with the distribution of food to families that attend Pebblebrook High School. Opportunity might also involve sorting and boxing the food items.
  • Project dates & times:
    • Wednesday, August 20 from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
    • Wednesday, September 24 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
    • Wednesday, October 15 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
    • Wednesday, November 19 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
    • Wednesday, December 17 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Blackwell Bears Athletic Association - Kennesaw
  • Youth Football & Cheerleading
  • Duties would include, but are not limited to: coaching (help run drills and practices), lining the fields for home games and making sure on game day the park is kept clean i.e. checking trash receptacles and restroom areas.
  • Season starts Monday, July 28 with practices being five (5) days straight for three (3) weeks! Practice sessions are from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm!
  • After the first three (3) weeks, practices are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Teams that make it to the Superbowl, the last practice will be on November 20!
  • Games will be held on Saturday starting as early as 9:00 am with the last games being at 9:00 pm.
  • Lining the field volunteers are needed on Thursday or Friday nights prior to the game!
  • Custodial volunteers (trash & restroom attendees) are needed on game day Saturdays.
  • Background check is required and agency will complete!
  • Orientation and special training (concussion & mandated reporting) will be required once your background check is complete!
Cobb County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs - Acworth

Ongoing Option

  • Allatoona Creek Trail System
  • Duties include: cut roots, cut sidehills, cut small trees, preform simple finish work on trails. Also build small bridges, build rock walls, cut branches, smooth and compact trails.
  • Every 2nd Thursday & Saturday of each month
  • Project starts 1/1/14 until finished
Cobb County Public Library - Locations across Cobb County

Option #1

  • Summer Reading Program
  • Program is offered every summer to encourage students to read over the summer.
  • Duties may include: greetings students and parents; registering students for the summer reading program; entering students names into the database; assisting with setting up and cleaning up craft/activity programs; and assisting staff as needed with programming. Additional duties may include: shelving materials; shifting and straightening materials; inspecting and ensuring that materials are in precise order.
  • Background check is required and agency will complete. Typically takes around seven (7) business days to process this request! If you have completed a background check for EDUC 2120 in the last six (6) months then you won't be required to complete and additional background check.
  • Days & times will vary according to the branch locations, and will include some nights and weekends!
    • Volunteers can determine their hours and site location.
    • If the branch of your choice can't accommodate your schedule, then the agency will refer you to another location!
  • No minimum length of service is required, but ideally looking for volunteers that can commit to volunteering through August 2.
  • Volunteers may choose to work between 4 to 20 hours hours per week!

Option #2

  • Summer Reading Program at East Marietta Library
  • This branch will be offering one-on-one reading sessions to students!
  • Sessions will be around 15 minutes long and will provide hands-on instruction. The branch will determine what days & times that they host these reading sessions!
    • Branch Hours:
      • Monday - Wednesday from 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
      • Thursday & Friday from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm
      • Saturday from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • Background check is required and agency will complete. Typically takes around seven (7) business days to process this request! If you have completed a background check for EDUC 2120 in the last six (6) months then you won't be required to complete and additional background check.
Georgia State Games - Various locations in Metro Atlanta & North Georgia
  • Volunteers will assist with the particular sport that is being played that week! Duties range from setting up the event; assisting with registration; keeping time; acting as a referee; distributing t-shirts & awards; breaking down the event upon the conclusion; and performing other tasks as determined by the Volunteer Coordinators.

  • Events are typically on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday!
  • The times of each event will vary depending on actual date of the event! Most events last all day and include a AM shift, PM shift, and/or All Day shift.
  • Games begin May 23 and run every weekend until August 2!!! No games are planned during the week of July 4th!!!
The Salvation Army - Doraville

Ongoing Option #1

  • Character Building Program
  • Help shape the lives of children from K to 6th grade with life skills such as safety, etiquette, cooking, etc. Training is provided and experience with children is preferred.
  • Every Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 7:15 pm
  • Background check is required and agency will complete!

Ongoing Option #2

  • Heavy Snack Chef
  • Assist with preparing heavy snacks for children who live in households which can't afford dinner. Help prepare food - nothing fancy or gourmet!
  • Every Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Background check is required and agency will complete!
The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History
  • Railroad Rendezvous
  • Need help with games, crafts, admissions, and running slot cars. Additionally, looking for some volunteers who are willing to dress and act as "railroad hobos."
  • Saturday, July 26
  • 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (You don't have the stay for the entire day!)
YMCA (East Cobb Location) - Marietta

Option #1

  • Pre-School Half Day Summer Camp
  • Help create awesome summer camp memories for the youngest campers in the community by assisting the counselors with providing a safe and fun camp experience via swim time and lots of other theme based activities; which change weekly!
  • Each week during the summer months
  • 9:00 am - Noon

Option #2

  • Full-Day Summer Camp
  • Help create awesomesummer camp memories for the youngest campers in the community by assisting the counselors with providing a safe and fun camp experience via swim time and lots of other theme based activities; which change weekly!
  • Each week during the summer months
  • 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Option #4

  • Basketball Academy
  • Help assist children with basketball skills training! No experience is necessary!
  • Dates: June 7 through August 2
  • Days/Times will vary!

Summer Ongoing Option

  • Summer Lunch Program
  • During the summer months, 1 in 5 children go hungry and often miss their breakfast and lunch meals! YMCA is working to help feed over 500 Cobb kids daily a healthy meal.
  • Volunteers are needed to work in groups to assist with the delivery and distribution of lunches to local apartment complexes over the summer.
  • Monday - Friday (covers 10 weeks of summer vacation)
  • Start at 10:45 am and return between the hours of 12:45 pm up until 2:00 pm! Depends on how long it takes to deliver the meals!
  • You can choose to volunteer one day or several!

Option #1
