Notes to Students:

  • Don't forget to come by the VKSU office to pick up your Service Verification Form.
  • Agency contact info will be provided with your Service Verification Form.
  • Students must then contact agency directly for days/times of volunteering availability.
  • Most agencies that deal directly with people on a one-on-one basis require a background check.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at your place of employment.

Boys & Girls Club Ellijay
(Gilmer)
A program that helps develop skills in children. Volunteers are needed to tutor children, help with homework and programs, and work on special projects. 

Orientation and background check are required; agency will complete background check.

South Rome:
  • Summer (May 29 to July 20): 7 am - 6 pm; After School: 3 - 6 pm
  • Background check and orientation required. They do background check. Orientation held as needed..
West Rome:
  • West Rome: 3-6 pm (after school)
  • Background check and orientation required. They do background check. Orientation held during week prior to start of volunteering.
Calhoun Pre-K Program Calhoun
(Gordon)
Volunteers will read to the children, interact with the children on the playground, and be an extra set of eyes and ears for 3- and 4-year-old children. Background check is required; agency will complete. Hours: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
CARES, Inc. Jasper (Pickens) Volunteers are needed to stock food, fill orders, reception duties, and some counseling. Most opportunities are Mondays 1-3 pm and Fridays from 8:30 am - Noon. Orientation held same day as volunteering.
City of Calhoun Recreation Calhoun (Gordon) Volunteers are needed to organize and assist with sports for youth and adults, ground maintenance, etc.
Crossroads Hospice Various Locations Agency is looking for dedicated volunteers to help provide socialization, extra care, and comfort to terminally ill patients and their families in private residences or care facilities. Their immediate need is for volunteers to provide companionship for patients and respite for caregivers. You can decide how much time you can devote, and the agency will try to match your interests and schedule. Background check required.
Forsyth County Community Connection - Hands on Forsyth Forsyth County area Volunteers can register for a variety of different volunteer opportunities throughout the Forsyth County area that range from working with children to serving food at a homeless shelter. 
- Go to the Hands On Forsyth site to register for a volunteer assignment and then come to the VKSU office to get your Service Verification Form.

End of Life Hospice Care. Flexible volunteering times: evenings, weekdays, and weekends. Background check required - agency will do. TB test required. 3-hour training, then additional as needed.

Kindergarten through 6th grade students are involved with learning economic concepts which are presented in a series of 7 themes.More Information

Mentor Me is an organization that reaches out to at-risk youth through mentoring. There is a community-based mentoring program as well as a weekly site-based mentoring program focused more on after-school tutoring and homework help. The children who are involved in this program need assistance improving their English skills to help them academically. All volunteers must complete a background check (agency does), attend an orientation that is held once monthly, and commit to at least one hour a week of service.

REACH Program - Sept. 2013-May 2014

Help elementary school students with homework, reading, and math. Play educational games, or just talk, building a friendship. Most students are Hispanic/Latin and need help with reading and fluency.

Mondays:

5pm-6pm and/or 6:30pm-7:30pm

Thursdays:

4pm-5pm and/or 5:15pm-6:15pm

 

The Pier Foundation Cumming The Pier Foundation is a non-profit organization that assists disabled adults with job training, employment opportunities, and a better quality of life. The Pier Foundation operates a thrift store to support their mission. Volunteers at the store will process donations, clean the store, and assist disabled adults with their assigned tasks.

Days: Tuesday - Saturday. Times: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
The Sheltering Arms Various Metro Atlanta Locations Works with parents to increase their understanding of child development and reduce parenting stress. Connects families with local resources.
Volunteers are needed to read to preschool children during Operation StoryBook. Books will be provided by the center, but feel free to bring your own child friendly books! Dates: Thursday, September 13 & Friday, September 14 Times: 9:00 am - 11:30 am and/or 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm You can register for one (1) 30 minute time slot or multiple 30 minute time slots! Work with hospice patients, family members, and staff members through direct care, running errands, reading, house work, or clerical/administrative support. Note: Minimum length of service is 3 months.
Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture Atlanta

Truly Living Well works to engage the community in developing local food systems through educations and food production. TLW manages 5-6 farm sites in and around metro Atlanta to increase access to food for all. Their goal is to demonstrate agriculture as a sustainable and economic solution for helping people to eat and live better.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work in the following areas: gardening, planting, mulching, making compost, harvesting, farm maintenance activities, event planning, hosting booths, assisting with the market, and sharing information with others.

Orientation is required for new volunteers - held monthly!
