Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities


Notes to Students:

  • Don't forget to come by the VKSU office to pick up your Service Verification Form.
  • Agency contact info will be provided with your Service Verification Form.
  • Students must then contact agency directly for days/times of volunteering availability.
  • Most agencies that deal directly with people on a one-on-one basis require a background check.
  • You cannot get credit for volunteering at your place of employment.
  • You cannot have family members to serve as your site supervisor!

(Forsyth)
Volunteers are needed to sort clothes, assist customers, and help clean the store. Money collected from the store is used to support programs that are geared towards women who are addicted and the families that are effected by this addiction. Hours:
      • Monday-Saturday
      • 9:00 am - 6:00
      • Minimum length of service is at least a two (2) hour shift!
Amedisys Hospice Service
Newnan
Work with hospice patients, family members, and staff members through direct care, running errands, reading, yard or house work, or clerical/administrative support.

Requirements:

  • Orientation is required and held when the application is completed!
  • Background check is required and agency will complete!
  • TB test required annually!

Hours:

  • Monday - Sunday
  • Daytime and evening hours available!
Atlanta Union Mission Thrift Store Gainesville
Volunteers will help greet and assist donors and customers, sort donated items, stock the store, and keep the store looking organized and clean. Hours:
      • Monday - Saturday
      • 9:00 am - 5:00 pm or later
Boys & Girls Club - Carroll County Carrollton Volunteers are needed to serve as tutor/homework helpers, includes grade levels 1st - 12th, with the greatest need in the elementary grade levels! Also, volunteers are needed to assist Club staff with various recreational programs.

Hours

      • Monday - Friday
      • 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Requirements

  • Background check is required - included in B&G application
  • Please note, it can take up to ten (10) to fourteen (14) business days to complete the background check process!
  • Orientation is required - coordinated around the volunteer's schedule and held after the background check is completed!

A program that helps develop skills in children. Volunteers are needed to tutor children, help with homework and programs, and work on special projects.  Important Information
  • Must complete a volunteer application that includes a background check
  • Monday - Friday (during the school year)

Boys & Girls Club Gainesville (Hall) Volunteers are needed to tutor children, help with homework and recreational programs.  Hours
      • Monday - Friday
      • Most clubs operate between the hours of 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm

  • Background check is required - prefer the volunteer to bring their own!

Calhoun Pre-K Program Calhoun
(Gordon)
Volunteers will read to the children, interact with the children on the playground, and be an extra set of eyes and ears for 3- and 4-year-old children. Important Information:
    • Background check is required; agency will complete.
    • Monday - Friday
    • 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
CARES, Inc. Jasper (Pickens) Volunteers are needed to stock food, fill orders, reception duties, and some counseling. Hours:
  • Monday from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
  • Thursday from 9:00 am - 11:00 am
  • Friday from 8:30 am - Noon
Clothes Less Traveled Peachtree City Volunteers are needed to restock shelves and raks, organize clothes and appliances, assist customers, assist with register and check-out process, clean up before/after hours, etc.

General Information:

  • Monday - Saturday
  • 9:45 am - 5:00 pm
  • Thursdays the store closes at 7:00 pm
  • Orientation is held the first day of service!
Corrigan Care, Inc. Cumming Need volunteers for the following program:
  • Respite Night - Volunteers play and supervise children while the parents get a much needed break.
Important Information:
    • Held once a month in Cumming
    • Times vary each month
    • Typically held on a Friday evening between 5:30pm - 10pm!
Crossroads Hospice Various Locations Agency is looking for dedicated volunteers to help provide socialization, extra care, and comfort to terminally ill patients and their families in private residences or care facilities. Their immediate need is for volunteers to provide companionship for patients and respite for caregivers. You can decide how much time you can devote, and the agency will try to match your interests and schedule. Requirements:

  • Orientation is held the 1st day of service!
FOCUS Cumming Newman FOCUS understands and supports the unique needs of families with children who are medically fragile or have significant developmental or physical disabilities. Need individuals to assist with respite care for children who have been diagnosed with a variety of developmental delays and volunteer with the Teen & Adult Groups. Important Information:
  • Backround check is required and agency will complete!
  • Teen & Adult Group meets once a month on a Saturday for 1 or 2 hours
  • Respite Care meets once a month on a Saturday from 10am - 2pm
Forsyth County Community Connection - Hands on Forsyth Forsyth County area Volunteers can register for a variety of different volunteer opportunities throughout the Forsyth County area that range from working with children to serving food at a homeless shelter. 
- Go to the Hands On Forsyth site to register for a volunteer assignment and then come to the VKSU office to get your Service Verification Form.

Goodwill of North Georgia Rome
Duties include the following:
  • Placement Call Specialist - contact particpants to document the progress they've made with the job search.
  • Computer Support Assistant - format resumes, covers letters, search online, and fax/copy documents.
  • Class Instructor - teach basic skills classes, including basic computers, how to upload resumes, and other job skills and search courses.
  • Assist with special projects like job fairs and job research projects.
  • Special need for volunteers that speak Spanish.

Heartland Hospice Stockbridge Volunteers are needed to help in the office and visit patients who are terminally ill. Requirements:

Volunteers needed at shelter! Duties include: walking the dogs, watering & feeding, socializing with the animals, general maintenance work, etc. Shelter is open everyday!!!
Horse Rescue Relief & Retirement Fund Cumming
(Forsyth)
Committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of horse and equine suffering from abuse and to the successful retirement of working horses and equine. Volunteers work on the farm - feeding the animals, turn the horses out, clean stalls, groom & exercise the horses, etc. Requirement & Hours:
  • New volunteers must attend an orientation that is held the 2nd Saturday of the month from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm!
  • Need volunteers everyday of the week in the mornings and evenings!
Junior Achievement of Georgia Henry Gordon Floyd Whitfield Murray Chattooga Gilmer Pickens Barrow Forsyth Help in providing services to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, understand business and economics and be workforce ready. Kindergarten through 6th grade students are involved with learning economic concepts which are presented in a series of 7 themes. Opportunities available throughout the Metro Atlanta area. Opportunities are also available to assist with the Discovery Day that is held at the GA World Congress Center! Requirement:
  • Get a background check (EDUC 2120 background checks will be accepted)
  • Attend an orientation/training session
  • Minimum lenght of service = 1 hr lesson at a local school once a week for 5 weeks + training
  • No time commitment is required for the Discovery Days and no training is required.
Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) Rome LSG offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities within each of their program areas. Mentor Me

Mentor Me is an organization that reaches out to at-risk youth through mentoring. There is a community-based mentoring program as well as a weekly site-based mentoring program focused more on after-school tutoring and homework help. The children who are involved in this program need assistance improving their English skills to help them academically. REACH Program from 9/13 - 5/14
  • Help elementary school students with homework, reading, and math.
  • Play educational games, or just talk, building a friendship.
  • Most students are Hispanic/Latin and need help with reading and fluency.
Hours:
  • Mondays:
    • 5pm - 6pm and/or 6:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Thursdays:
    • 4pm - 5pm and/or 5:15pm - 6:15pm
Requirements:
  • Complete a background check that the agency will provide
  • Attend an orientation that is held on a monthly basis

The Pier Foundation Cumming The Pier Foundation is a non-profit organization that assists disabled adults with job training, employment opportunities, and a better quality of life. The Pier Foundation operates a thrift store to support their mission. Volunteers at the store will process donations, clean the store, and assist disabled adults with their assigned tasks. Hours:

The Sheltering Arms Various Metro Atlanta Locations Volunteers assist teachers in the classroom, provide children one-on-one attention as they participate in learning activities, and read to children. By giving a young child your undivided attention, you help them to see the connection between block building and math, between feeding fish and science, between hearing a story and learning to read.

Requirements:

Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture Atlanta
East Point
Riverdale
Truly Living Well works to engage the community in developing local food systems through educations and food production. TLW manages 5-6 farm sites in and around metro Atlanta to increase access to food for all. Their goal is to demonstrate agriculture as a sustainable and economic solution for helping people to eat and live better.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work in the following areas: gardening, planting, mulching, making compost, harvesting, farm maintenance activities, event planning, hosting booths, assisting with the market, and sharing information with others.
Hours & Requirement:
  • Monday - Thursday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Friday from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm
  • Saturday from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Must sign a waiver the first day of service!
VistaCare Hospice Cumming Provides care for those who are terminally ill. Volunteers provide companionship support and can also provide administrative support. Important Information:
  • Minimum length of service is four (4) hours per month
  • Hours: 10 am - 4 pm on Monday - Sunday
  • Agency runs background check
  • Orientations held every 6-8 weeks on a Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm.
  • Orientation is required and held on an individual basis and dependent on the volunteers schedule.
