Behavioral Response Programs

What is Behavioral Response

Behavioral Response Programs (BRP) is a division of Student Success Services that focuses on identifying and assisting students who are distressed and exhibiting abnormal, threatening, or dangerous behavior. Entities similar to the BRP are becoming commonplace on university campuses across the country in response to the increasing number of disruptive events. College and university campuses are traditionally very open and accessible institutions, KSU is no exception to this, and with that level of openness also comes risk and responsibility. The risk of openness and accessibility is that such freedoms are extended not only to safe and stable individuals, but also to persons who have the capacity for abnormal, threatening, or dangerous behavior. The vast majority of problems on college and university campuses are caused by a small number of students; the BRP works with members of the KSU community to identify and intervene in the lives of these students in a way that serves the best interest of the individuals and the KSU community.

Because of their constant interaction with students, KSU faculty and staff are in the best position to help identify students who are precipitating towards crisis. We know that those who need help often don’t seek it, and when they do, are oftentimes more likely to confide in a faculty member than to seek professional help. Additionally, students who are developing problems often display a number of warning signs or “red flags” that suggest they are no longer functioning adequately.
