The purpose of the
Faculty Fireside Program, administered through the
Division of Student Success, is to bring together faculty
and relatively small groups of students outside the
classroom. This informal interaction with faculty has proven
to be very beneficial for our students. Items of discussion
have ranged from career opportunities to local and national
events to concerns about college life. Many of our faculty
have held a “Fireside” in their homes with excellent
results. Students attach great significance to being invited
into an instructor’s home for it makes a statement to them
about being valued. Likewise, faculty who have participated
have been very positive about the experience.
We realize logistics
may make a “Fireside” in your home difficult, and there are
options available on campus. For example, you may have a
“Fireside” in the Leadership Room located on the second
floor of the Student Center, at the Legacy Gazebo, or in The
Commons. To reserve these areas you will need to contact the
Office of
University Events.
Certain expenses of
hosting a "Fireside" are reimbursable up to $75.00. Please
remember you must have prior approval from the Vice
President for Student Success, you must have original
ITEMIZED receipts, you must submit a sign-in sheet and you
must request reimbursement within 30 days of the Fireside.
You cannot be reimbursed for sales tax (bring a
state tax exempt form with you). You will only be
reimbursed for food and food-related expenses (i.e., paper
goods). Door prizes, gift cards, etc. are NOT reimbursable
expenses in this program. For complete information
concerning food, read the
Kennesaw State Guidelines for Food Purchases.
Due to the popularity
of this program and the limited funds available, it is
necessary to put in place some guidelines for the Learning
Communities. In the event that more than one Learning
Community instructor would like to host a “Fireside” at the
same time, the reimbursable amount will remain $75.00. The
number of students would not double due to an additional
instructor participating. If you have any questions
regarding this, please feel free to call the Office of the
Vice President for Student Success.
You are strongly
encouraged to participate in this program. If the class is
large, break it into groups and have two “Firesides!” A
faculty “Open House” for students on Sunday afternoons is
common at many institutions and that is one option to
explore. Regardless of how it is accomplished, we in Student
Success hope you will consider hosting a “Fireside” during
the semester.
