Behavioral Response Programs
Behavioral Response Programs (BRP) is a division of Student Success Services that takes a planned and proactive approach to identifying and assisting students who are distressed and/or exhibiting abnormal, threatening, or dangerous behavior. Through early identification, BRP aims to assist students, get them connected with the resources they need to be successful, and prevent crises. The work of BRP is guided by the over arching goals of maximizing student success and community safety.
Behavioral Response is available for consultation and/or training in best practices in dealing with distressed, disruptive, or dangerous individuals. Additionally, an extension of BRP is the Behavioral Response Team, a multidisciplinary team representing a variety of campus offices that meets weekly to assess and manage any concerns that have been brought to its attention. The BRT process does not replace faculty classroom management, disciplinary processes, and/or public safety responses to incidents. It provides one more opportunity to report individuals exhibiting distressed, threatening, or dangerous behaviors.
Because of their constant interaction with students, KSU faculty and staff are in the best position to help identify students who are precipitating towards crisis. We know that those who need help often don’t seek it, and when they do, are oftentimes more likely to confide in a faculty member than to seek professional help. Additionally, students who are developing problems often display a number of warning signs or “red flags” that suggest they are no longer functioning adequately.
