Belize - Archaeology Field School Summer 2010
Program Description
This is an international archaeological field school that will take place at the ancient Maya site of Pacbitun, located in Belize, Central America. Pacbitun is located in west central Belize and was continuously occupied for close to 2,000 years. The focus of the archaeological investigations in the summer of 2010 is the Preclassic period (900-300 BC), a time of increasing cultural complexity for the Maya. This course is designed to teach students the methods and techniques employed by archaeologists in the field and provide students with a general knowledge of the ancient Maya. Students will participate in excavation, survey, and laboratory analysis during this four week course.

Program Cost
The cost of the program is $2100.00 includes lodging, meals, program-related excursions, ground transportation, and insurance. Students must pay for their own airfare. Tuition is paid separately. Cost is subject to change.

Housing
Students will stay in double rooms at a hotel.
Faculty Background Dr. Terry Powis has spent the past 21 summers in Belize, for travel and research. He has traveled widely in Central America, especially in Mexico and Guatemala. Dr. Powis has taught archaeological field school courses to undergraduate students since 1991.

Courses
SA 4490: Belize Archaeology Field School (6 credit hours). SA 4490 can be substituted for either ANTH 3335 (Archaeology Field Techniques) or ANTH 4100 (Directed Applied Research). Both of these courses are also worth six credit hours.
