Irish Drama at the Gaiety
School of Acting
Program Description
This program offers a unique opportunity to learn about Irish drama through the study of text and performance. It focuses on the plays and playwrights that have made Ireland a world name in theater. The program of practical acting workshops and seminars places the writers in their theatrical, historical and cultural contexts. The course focuses on four major Irish writers of the 20th century: John Millington Synge, Sean O’Casey, Samuel Beckett and Brian Friel, along with additional study of contemporary writers including Martin McDonagh and Marina Carr. Students will develop an understanding of the historical and literary background of the selected plays through seminars lead by leading Irish scholars. Then, through intensive workshops with professional Irish actors and directors, students will explore the theatrical essence of the texts. The program culminates in a showcase performance at the Gaiety School in Dublin.
