Mathematics and Statistics Education in France and Romania
Summer 2010

Program Description
Experience a rich living, educational and cultural experience in two dynamic European countries: Romania and France. The program incorporates visits at the best academic and research institutions in Paris and Romania.

Participants will begin their journey with a three-day stay in Paris, France. In Paris, we will visit Lycée Louis-le-Grand, prestigious French high-school, and Université Marne la Vallée. We will also visit some of the French landmarks among which the Louvre Museum, the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower.

From Paris we will fly to Bucharest, the capital of Romania, where we will visit the University of Bucharest, the Romanian American University, the Romanian Academy of Sciences and several institutes which specialize either in statistics research or in applications of statistics, among which the Center for Mathematical Statistics, the Gallup Romania Institute, the Institute for Marketing and Opinion Polls and the National Institute. In Bucharest the students will be attending eight invited lectures presented by distinguished professors and researchers that have international reputation. Through the presentations students will learn about the history of mathematics and statistics in Romania, and statistics education in college.

At the University of Bucharest and the Romanian American University the participants will meet and exchange impressions and discuss topics of common interest with Romanian students. Most Romanian students learn English as a foreign language in schools and they are quite fluent in speaking, so there will be no language barrier.

While in Bucharest we will visit touristic places, among which Mogosoaia Palace, the Royal Palace and the Village Museum, to enhance the cultural and historic Romanian experience. We will also visit other Romanian cities: Brasov (with its nearby Bran castle), Sinaia (the Peles Castle, former Royal palace), Craiova, and we will take trips to visit some unique monasteries on the River Olt Valley. In Craiova the students will attend lectures at the University and the School of Medicine and will visit with local students. The students will also visit a high-school and learn about the mathematics curriculum in high-school.
