South Africa - Mathematics -
Summer 2010

Program Description
This exciting, new study abroad program will provide students with a rewarding experience living and studying South African history and education through immersion in its rich and diverse culture. Durban is located along the beautiful coast of the Indian Ocean, home of the Golden Mile, and is the host city for the 2010 World Cup.  Durban boasts having the most unique, African feel of any South African city, with a complex interweaving of Zulu, Indian and Dutch African culture.

The students will attend classes at the Edgewood Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and will have field experiences at local schools.   The program will include excursions to Cape Town, and Pietermaritzburg.  In addition to the scheduled program activities, field trips will include visits to PheZulu Safari Park, the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the Durban City Centre Museums, the African Art Centre, and Tala Game Reserve to explore other aspects of South African culture and natural environment. 

Housing
Students will reside in a quality bed and breakfast inn while in Durban.  Rooms overlook the beautiful Palmiett Nature Reserve.

A $300 nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of application.
The first program installment of $1905 is due by February 15, 2010.
The second program installment of $1905 is due by March 15, 2010.

Program Cost
The package costs $4110 for the 16-day program.  This includes round-trip airfare from Atlanta to South Africa, local transportation, accommodations, group excursions, admission costs to museums and attractions, emergency health insurance, and all meals.  Tuition is paid separately. The price is subject to change and could be less.

Courses
This study abroad opportunity is open to all majors.  All participants will take one of the following three credit-hour courses:
SA 4490 (Equivalent to MATH 4490) – Mathematics Education in South Africa  
[for undergraduate students]
SA 8890 (Equivalent to MATH 7900) – Mathematics Education in South Africa  
[for graduate students]

Faculty Background
Dr. Nikita Patterson is an assistant professor of mathematics education in the department of Mathematics and Statistics at Kennesaw State University.  Her research interests are in geometry, technology, and multiple representations.
