Service Learning with the Kids League, Kampala, Uganda - Summer 2010

Program Description
Uganda has been described as “The Pearl of Africa”.  It is home to over 1000 species of birds and some of the world’s most beautiful game parks.  It possesses several very unique and diverse ecosystems. Students will have the opportunity to visit cultural sites, enjoy a game drive at a game park, cross the Equator, visit the source of the Nile and attend an event at the National Theater. Day trips, visits to artists’ markets, restaurants, shops and villages will provide more informal opportunities to see the beauty and culture of Uganda.

Participants will work with The Kids’ League (TKL) director and staff, headquartered in Kampala, Uganda, to implement a sport event that includes a health education component, with a focus on children programs. This internship/service learning study abroad course will allow students a unique chance to work with Ugandan sport and human service professionals, children and their families.  The program is specifically designed to allow students a hands-on opportunity to understand the issues and challenges of planning and delivering health/sport services in a developing country.

Students who wish to earn a total of 6 hours of credit for this experience will also enroll in an additional 3-hour Directed Study. Under supervision from the appropriate faculty member, these students will develop a health/sport based project aimed at planning and delivering services in a developing nation or for a specialized target population in the U.S.
