EU Economy and Business Study Abroad

Program Description
The European Union is the largest business and political partner of the USA.  Participants will study EU policy and its impact on institutions, infrastructure, entrepreneurship, innovation, research, industry and business practices within the EU, and its overall impact on the global economy.  This program will also provide students with opportunities to observe and experience the institutional reforms that have enabled the reunification of East and West Germany, and the transition of Poland and the Czech Republic from centrally planned to market-driven economies.  We will examine the successes and failures of the transition process. And finally, we will examine EC Industrial, Competition, Innovation, Trade and Economic Development policies.

Program Cost
The cost of the program is $3,800 (exclusive of tuition), which includes round trip airfare from Atlanta, all transportation in Europe, accommodations, all breakfasts, most lunches and dinners, company and institutional visits, and scheduled group excursions.  Global Learning Scholarships are available to help with travel costs.  Tuition is paid separately. Cost is subject to change.

Accommodations
We will have shared (double) accommodation in hotels in Berlin, Bernburg, Prague, Krakow and Warsaw.  Each room has twin beds, a bathroom, and is internet-ready.

Course Offerings and Credits: (All students are required to take both courses)
ECON 4490 Special Topic in Economics (3 credits): The economic and business environment within the European Union with a focus on the transitioning economies of Eastern Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.   

ECON 4530 Public & Urban Finance (3 credits):   Public Finance at the local, regional, national and supranational level within the EU.

Required Prerequisites:
ECON 2100: Principles of Microeconomics
ECON 2200: Principles of Macroeconomics

A $300 nonrefundable deposit is due at time of application.
The first program installment of $1750 is due by March 1, 2010.

Faculty Background
Professor Vivian Kirby has taught undergraduate courses in Global Economics, Economic Development, International Trade & Investments, and Special Topics in Economics with case studies on the transitioning economies of Poland and the Czech Republic.  Previously, Ms. Kirby was one of the program directors for KSU’s China Business Study Abroad Program in May of 2008.  Prior to this, she has conducted over 80 educational travel programs to worldwide destinations ranging from China, Japan and Southeast Asia, to Central and South America, to Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Georgia, India, Western and Eastern Europe and North America. 

Dr. Luc Noiset teaches courses in Economic Development, Public Finance, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.  Prior to joining the faculty within the Coles College of Business, he worked as an economist in the Office of Tax Analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He subsequently spent a year in Riga, Latvia as the U.S. Treasury’s representative advisor to the Latvian Minister of Finance, and a year in Moscow as a member of a U.S. government sponsored Russia fiscal reform project.   Dr. Noiset has been advisor to a number of governments of the former Soviet Union.
