General Study
Summer 2009
Program Description Based at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), located alongside the Atlantic ocean, the beautiful campus is near several places of historical and cultural importance, and possesses a great atmosphere for study. Students will take courses from UCC faculty in several disciplines, and will live with host families on the UCC campus.
The program includes excursions to the capital city of Accra, the medieval castles in Cape Coast and Elmina both of which were used as staging areas for the transatlantic slave “trade”, the Asante capital of Kumasi, Bonwire (Kente cloth weaving village), plus an excursion to a game (wildlife) reserve in northern Ghana.
Students will also have opportunity to attend and participate in the highly acclaimed Pan African Festival, PANAFEST (see http://www.panafest.us/ for information on the 2007 version)

Program Cost
The program cost of $4,500.00 includes airfare, housing, most meals, program-related field trips and emergency health insurance. The price does not include tuition. Students will live and take meals with host families — all faculty living on the University of Cape Coast campus. Cost subject to slight change.

Courses
All participants will take the three credit-hour course taught by KSU’s Dr. Sam Abaidoo (that is, SOCI 4434: Emerging Social and Political Issues in Africa)

Students will select an additional three credit-hour course taught by UCC and/or USG professors. These classes include, but are not limited to, the equivalents of the following:
ANTH 4410: Cultural Anthropology: A Global Perspective
ENGL 3400: Survey of African Literatures
GEOG 3350: Geography of Sub-Saharan Africa
HIST 3392: History of West Africa
MUSI 1107: Arts in Society: Music
Other classes can be arranged to meet students’ needs
SOCI 3398 and other internships*
*Internships available in development work, slavery and related histories, cross-cultural adjustments, etc.
