Proposed Information Course Prefix and Number: FORMTEXT MUSI 3351 Course Title: FORMTEXT Advanced Instrumental Conducting/Literature Credit Hours (format should be # - # - #): FORMTEXT 2-0-2 Prerequisites: FORMTEXT MUSI 2222, MUSI 2112, MUSI 3332 (Prerequisites are courses or requirements that non-negotiable and must be successfully completed by any student before enrolling in the course or program under consideration. Corequisites are courses that can be taken before or in the same semester as the course under consideration. Courses at the upper-division level will require lower-division competencies or prerequisites.) Course Description for the Catalog: FORMTEXT Advanced elements of conducting including baton technique, score reading, cueing, expression, interpretation and rehearsal skills with an emphasis on applying these techniques through band and orchestra literature in practical conducting experiences involving instrumental ensembles. Required laboratory component. II. Justification for Course A. Explain assessment findings which led to course development. FORMTEXT After undergoing an extensive program review, the Music Education faculty concluded that music educators need advanced preparation in instrumental conducting and orchestral/band literature. The program assessment and subsequent revision process is based on needed outcomes for teachers in the field. At the present time, only one conducting course is required, which was determined to be inadequate. B. Explain for Prerequisites: What is the substance of content in each prerequisite that commands its inclusion as a prerequisite to the proposed course? FORMTEXT MUSI 2222, MUSI 2112 are fourth semester Music Theory and Aural Skills courses, which complete the sequence of foundational courses needed for Advanced Instrumental Conducting/Literature. MUSI 3332 is the basic Instrumental Conducting course which serves as a conducting skill foundation for advanced study. What is the desired sequence of prerequisites? FORMTEXT MUSI 2222, MUSI 2112 (Concurrent), MUSI 3332 should be taken the semester prior to the Advanced Conducting/Literature course. What is the rationale for requiring the above sequence of prerequisites? FORMTEXT Foundational studies provide the basic skills/knowledge needed for Advanced Conducting and the study and analysis of instrumental literature. How often are the required prerequisites offered? FORMTEXT Yearly. Give any other justification for the course. II. Additional Information A. Where does this course fit sequentially and philosophically within the program of study. FORMTEXT The course will be offered in the Fall of the Junior Year, following the above prerequsites which are placed in the Spring of the Sophomore year. B. What efforts have been made to ensure that this course does not duplicate the content of other college courses with similar titles, purposes, or content? FORMTEXT Following the needs assessment by the Music Education faculty, it was determined that this course is needed, due to lack of specific advanced instrumental content in the program. C. Where will the course be located in the program (elective, required in Area F, required or elective for the major)? Indicate and justify its placement in the curriculum. FORMTEXT In the Teaching Field Requirement. D. How often will this course be offered? FORMTEXT One semester per year. E. All sections of the course will be taught with the understanding that the following apply: 1. Purpose of the course 2. Objectives of the course 3. Course content F. What instructional methodologies will be incorporated into the course to stimulate group process, writing skills, multiculturalism, and educational outcomes? FORMTEXT Students will be expected to plan and conduct advanced band and orchestral literature after thorough analysis of the musical selections required. The students will also be expected to research, write and reflect upon appropriate musical literature, according to course goals. Students will demonstrate competency by proficiency conducting exams with instrumental ensembles. Instrumental ensembles within the discipline of music is inherently multicultural. National Standards in Music Education specify the inclusion of experiences in music from a global perspective. G. Outline the plan for continuous course assessment. What are the department, school, college, or professional standards which will be used for the assessment? How will it be determined that the course is current, meeting the educational needs of students and responsive to educational standards? How often will the course assessment be done by the department? FORMTEXT Assessment criteria as related to the Course Goals and Objectives will be determined by NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) required outcomes and competencies for the knowledge and skills needed in score preparation and conducting. (See accompanying syllabus.) The Music Curriculum Committee yearly conducts a thorough review of the curriculum offered to all students within the three degree programs. Careful attention is given to content knowledge and musical skills necessary to develop excellent musicians and educators. The process is outlined in the Assurance of Learning report and the rigorous alignment with the NASM outcomes and competencies. H. Resources and Funding Required A. What resources will be redirected to accommodate this course? FORMTEXT Three full time instrumental faculty members are presently qualified to plan, implement, and guide the students in instruction and in placements for conducting assignments. In addition, Kennesaw State University has a variety of large and small ensembles for conducting opportunities., Explain what items will cause additional cost to the department/school/college Personnel FORMTEXT : Presently in place.
