Freddie Ashley
Part-time Instructor of Theatre and Performance Studies

Freddie Ashley was recently named Artistic Director of Actor's Express in Atlanta, Georgia, where this season he will direct productions of dark play or stories for boys by Carlos Murillo, When Something Wonderful Ends by Sherry Kramer and the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He previously served as Literary Manager of the Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award. While at Alliance, he served as dramaturg for around 40 productions and workshops, working with such playwrights as Kenneth Lin, OyamO and Tammy Ryan. He has also participated in new play development projects with the New Group and Page 73 Productions in New York.

One of Atlanta's busiest directors, his previous projects include A Man of No Importance (Theatre Gael, Atlanta Journal Constitution Best Musical Revival of 2004); Lawrenceburg (World Premiere - Dad's Garage, AJC Top Ten of 2006); I Am My Own Wife, The Last Sunday in June and The Great American Trailer Park Musical (Actor's Express); and Glorious, Waving Goodbye, As it is in Heaven, Wait Until Dark, Moon Over Buffalo, Lend Me a Tenor and Camelot (Aurora Theatre). He has also directed the KSU productions of subUrbia, The Revenger's Tragedy and The Bald Soprano.

Prof. Ashley is a past recipient of the Elliot Hayes Award for Dramaturgy from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and the Arts Encouragement Award from the Charles Loridans Foundation.

He has been teaching at KSU since 2002. He also serves on the faculty of Shorter College and has previously taught at Jacksonville State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. He holds a BFA in Theatre cum laude from Shorter College and an MFA in Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi.
