A Choreographic Partnership
The KSU/Dance Canvas partnership is intended to promote choreographic scholarship among student artists and emerging choreographers in the city of Atlanta. The mission of Dance Canvas is to provide opportunities and venues to increase the awareness of professional dance in the Southeast U.S. This mission is accomplished through three areas of focus:
Dance Canvas has presented world premiers of choreography from 27 emerging professional choreographers showcased using 150 professional dancers in the city of Atlanta. Dance Canvas has also introduced nearly 900 school children to dance through its DC NEXT youth program curriculum, and performed for over 10,000 new audience members. The career development program allows choreographers to receive essential resources to produce their choreographic scholarship. Dance Canvas has featured dancers and works from emerging choreographers affiliated with American Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Repertory Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, Philadanco, Ron K. Brown/Evidence, Dayton Contemporary Dance Theater, and more. Angela Harris, the executive director of Dance Cancas was awarded the 2011 Emerging Leader Award from Americans for the Arts. The KSU/Dance Canvas partnership will provide choreographic opportunities for student choreographers every year, and support the mission of artist development in the city of Atlanta.
