Courses The 0099 classes offered through University Studies are designed to help students improve their English language skills in preparation for college courses. KSU offers classes exclusively for international students and speakers of ESL: Reading 0099 ESL, English 0099 ESL, ESL 1105 (Grammar Seminar), ESL 1106 (Pronunciation Seminar), English 1101 ESL and English 1102 ESL. In Reading 0099 ESL, students learn strategies to improve their reading speed, build their English vocabulary, and practice reading texts critically for specific purposes. They also receive practical advice on note taking, study skills, and test taking. Students develop listening and speaking skills in classroom discussions and in the language laboratory. In English 0099 ESL, students improve their fluency, review rules of grammar and vocabulary usage, and practice strategies for organizing and supporting their ideas in various kinds of academic writing. This course also includes a discussion component to help students improve their speaking and listening skills. To enroll in these courses, please see David Schmidt in the department of University Studies. The 0099 courses carry no degree credit. In ESL 1105 (Grammar Seminar), students focus on North American English grammar, application, and editing. The class meets as a small group and in one-to-one conferences, thereby meeting the diverse needs of each student. Counts as elective credit toward the degree. In ESL 1106 (Pronunciation Seminar), students increase fluency by learning the stress, rhythm, intonation, and sound system of North American English. The class meets in a small group and in one-to-one conferences, thereby meeting the pronunciation needs of each student. Counts as elective credit toward the degree. English 1101 ESL and English 1102 ESL carry the same credit and cover the same material as the standard English 1101-1102 sequence, with a focus on topics of interest to international students and an emphasis on typical ESL problems in grammar, diction, organization, and the use of sources. These courses are offered through the English department. Please see the English department secretary in the Humanities Building to enroll in English 1101 or 1102. For
