Faculty Profile Fall 1999 Kudos to Dr. David Bennett, Chair of the Department of Baccalaureate Nursing and charter member of the Honors Council. Since coming to KSU in 1986, Dr. Bennett has authored several special--and highly successful--initiatives within the Nursing Program: with Dr. Marie Bremner, for example, he designed and implemented an Honors Program exclusively for Nursing students, and was on a steering committee to establish KSU's chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honorary society. In 1989, he extended his reach into the local community, joining forces with MUST Ministries to start a clinic for the homeless in Marietta, and staffing it with KSU Nursing students and faculty. (For this effort and many others he won the 1991 Philip C. Preston Award for Distinguished Community Service.) And, most recently, he has inspired a sense of internationalism among KSU's Nursing students, collaborating with other Nursing faculty to establish a summer program in Oaxaca, Mexico, and working with Dr. Regina Dorman, Chair of the Department of Primary Care Nursing, to build an exchange program with health care professionals at the University of Leeds, in the Yorkshire Dales of England. He is also the new President of the Georgia Leagues for Nursing. The Undergraduate Honors Program, of course, has also been a beneficiary of Dr. Bennett's generosity and expertise. A member of the Honors Council since the program's inception, he has participated in every stage of the program's development and growth; is a creative and conscientious mentor to three Honors students; and regularly advises KSU's Joint Enrollment Honors students. When he is not giving himself to his work or his family (he and his wife, Pat, have two sons, 21 and 16), Dr. Bennett enjoys restoring an old Jeep, reading extensively, and increasing his fluency in Spanish.
