Meet the Team — Ms. Fiona Brantley & Dr. Michelle Joyner.

Meet the SI Coordinator — Ms. Fiona Brantley

FIona

Fiona Brantley joined the faculty of Kennesaw State University in fall 2006 as the Coordinator of the Supplemental Instruction program and Assistant Professor of English. She teaches ENGL 1101 in learning communities and also ENGL 1102. She brings with her over twenty years of experience in the field of higher education both as an administrator and an instructor.

The SI program is new and seeks to help students achieve academic success. “I love being a part of the SI program. SI actually gives students an early warning. On the first day of class we tell them that this is one of the most difficult courses at KSU. The D, F, W rate is over 30%. Then we tell them the good news … we are here to help you navigate the rapids. Let us partner with you so that you achieve your potential in this course. What a wonderful opportunity!!” says Brantley.

Since the pilot program in Spring 2006, the SI program has continued to grow. It is something that Professor Brantley is greatly encourage by. She says, “More and more faculty members have embraced SI and more and more students are asking about it. This is a sign that we are growing and have the potential to make a great impact here at KSU. We just have to keep doing a good job and spreading the word. Our students are very busy BUT they should not be too busy to ensure that they do well in class. SI is one way to do this.”

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the Supplemental Instruction program, please contact Fiona Brantley at (678) 797-2346 or by email – fbrantle@kennesaw.edu.

Assistant Coordinator - Math — Dr. Michele Joyner

micheleDr. Michele Joyner joined the faculty of Kennesaw State University in fall 2008 as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics.  She teaches upper level applied mathematics courses as well as PreCalculus and Calculus I.

She became involved with Supplemental Instruction while pursuing her PhD at North Carolina State University.  While working as a graduate assistant, she was able to observe sessions in math, chemistry, and other science courses.  She saw how beneficial the SI sessions were to those students in “historically difficult courses”, because the students themselves are actively involved in the sessions. When presented with the opportunity to get involved with SI once again at KSU, she was eager to help.  She believes that peer-led SI sessions are a wonderful way to help students learn, and more importantly, retain the material.

If you have any questions, you can contact Michele Joyner by phone at 770-423-6096 or by email at joyner.michele@gmail.com.

Together we can make a difference.
