Year 2 Kennesaw Vision Statement: Program Description: SophYE Peer Leaders is a program that provides leadership training for rising sophomores and uses their experience as first-year students in KSU 1101, our first-year seminar. One of their primary functions is to help build a sense of community among the students enrolled in a section of KSU 1101, which is usually connected to two or three general education courses in a larger learning community (CLASS: Communities for Learning Success). We are currently running a pilot version of the program and will begin a formal rollout in Spring 2005. Peer Leaders are drawn from KSU’s First-Year Experience Program, which involves KSU 1101 and/or a CLASS. They are nominated by their KSU 1101 or CLASS instructors to apply for the program in the second semester of their first year. They are interviewed and then selected based on the following criteria: an understanding of the philosophy of KSU 1101 as a first-year seminar, the potential for working with groups, and the ability to contribute to learning community themes. During the Spring Semester (the Training Phase), Peer Leaders attend a weekly session conducted by the KSU Center for Student Leadership on the following topics: team building, trust, coaching and mentoring, personal identity, values, presenting, and conflict management. Toward the end of the semester, they are paired with a KSU 1101 instructor to develop a rapport and help provide input on a KSU 1101 syllabus for the following Fall Semester (the Experiential Phase).
