Then consider the BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in
Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies program is an interdisciplinary approach to studying human influences on the environment. Housed in the University College with the collaboration from faculty in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Mathematics, students in this program earn a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Environmental Studies. The program applies the different perspectives of the humanities, social sciences, statistics, and the natural sciences to focus on environmental and natural resource issues. We offer two tracks: a policy-emphasis track and a science-emphasis track. Each track will train leaders with the necessary mix of scientific and policy backgrounds to help address the complex environmental issues we face today.
The Policy-Emphasis track of the Environmental Studies program integrates study in the social and natural sciences to educate students in environmental policy and policymaking at all levels of government or industry. Students will gain skills in the analysis, design, and monitoring of policy, as well as experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and laboratory work. Through interdisciplinary coursework in public policy, geography, economics, biology, and chemistry, students achieve a firm grounding in both policy studies and natural science to equip them to engage environmental issues both technically and politically.
The Science-Emphasis track of the Environmental Studies program integrates study in statistics, biology, and chemistry with the knowledge and skills necessary to collect, analyze, and evaluate data important in understanding the environment and the effects of humans on that environment. Students will also receive a background in the social sciences to provide a familiarity with environmental policy and policymaking at all levels of government and industry, so that they can successfully integrate their scientific knowledge with policy making and regulations.
