r. Diana McClintock has a BA in Political Science and Art History from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in Art History from Emory (1998). She was most recently an Associate Professor of Art History at the Atlanta College of Art (1997-2006), and before that she taught at Emory, and at several colleges and Chapman University in Southern California. Before returning to graduate school she was Curator of Education at Laguna Art Museum (Orange County, CA), and a museum educator at the Municipal Art Gallery (Barnsdall Art Park) in Los Angeles, experiences that inform her approach to her discipline today. Her focus is “Engaged Scholarship,” that brings her work down from its ivory tower to integrate scholarly activity with community involvement. She has developed several Service Learning projects that provide active learning experiences and hands-on application of academic concepts to real-life situations for her students. Recent projects have included Modern and Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection, the first exhibition of the KSU Museum modern art collection. Dr. McClintock curated the exhibition, and guided students who conducted original research to document, analyze and interpret individual works in the show. Each student contributed a brief text that was published in the catalogue and will remain in the Museum files for use in future research and the development of didactic materials.  She will also direct a study abroad program that will take students to Germany, to visit the premier international contemporary art exhibition dOCUMENTA(13) in June, 2012, and has taught on the KSU study abroad program to Montepulciano, Italy, during the summers of 2009 and 2010.

The focus of her current research and scholarly activity involves the documentation, preservation and restoration of Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens in Summerville, GA. In partnership with the non-profit organization that currently owns the site, Dr. McClintock led a summer class that began the enormous project to document and preserve Finster’s “Paradise on earth.” Students began an oral history video archive, researched and documented specific sculptures in the oldest section of the gardens, and spoke to or corresponded with family members in order to gain insight into Howard Finster and his immense project.

Dr. McClintock also writes reviews for Art Papers and  Sculpture, both international contemporary art periodicals.

STUDENT SUPERVISION

Directed Study Research at Kennesaw State University:
Burkly, Ann. “Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens and McNeil Island” (working title, AMST7500, Summer 2011).
Trodahl, Joann. “Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens” (working title, a sociological study for AMST 7500, Summer 2010).
Moye, Ann. “Howard Finster and Eddie Owens Martin” (working title, AMST 7500, Summer 2011).
Maloof, James. Noel Mahaffey, Karel Appel and Lyonel Feininger for Modern and Contemporary Art in the KSU Collection (summer 2010; publication January 2011).

Internships at Kennesaw State University:
Kibreva, Elena. I supervised Elena as she researched approximately twenty engravings and etchings, dating from the 18th through the late 19th century, that were recently donated to the KSU Museum. She conducted original research on the artists, as well as the provenance, historical data (for the KSU Museum permanent files), compiled condition reports, and produced an exhibition proposal. (Spring, 2011)

Gant, Mersia. Mersia researched several works of art in the African Collection of the Michael C. Carlos Museum, directly under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Stephenson, Curator of African Art and a half-time Lecturer in Art History at KSU. I met with her initially to develop the internship, reviewed her progress, discussed her work with Professor Stephenson, read her finished reports and assigned her grade. (Fall 2010)

Leonard, Melissa. Melissa worked for two months during the summer under my direct supervision at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, organizing archival materials about Georgia activism (in art) that became permanent additions to the research collection in the MOCA/GA Educational Resource Center. She and I conducted video interviews of living artists that became part of the MOCA/GA Georgia Artist Oral History Project, and she transcribed the interviews for the permanent archives. (Summer 2009)

Sims, Melanie. Melanie worked for a semester under my direct supervision at MOCA/GA organizing archival materials about Georgia activist artist groups and conducting video interviews of living Georgia artists that became the first additions to the MOCA/GA Georgia Artist Oral History Project. Melanie focused on the work of the Atlanta Women’s Art Coalition, a group that splintered off from the Art Workers Coalition in the late 1960s, and pieced together the first written timeline of this group’s activities that is now a part of the permanent archives at MOCA/GA. (Spring 2009)

Elliott, Angela. Angela was a graphic design major who wanted experience in a contemporary art setting, so I arranged for her to work with the Public Relations Director at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. She wrote press releases, designed exhibition brochures and designed web-based publicity materials. (Summer 2008)

Crofton, Tyler. Tyler worked with Dr. Rebecca Stone-Miller at Emory University’s Carlos Museum, researching and writing about Pre-Columbian Art in the Carlos Museum collection. I monitored his progress, in consultation with Dr. Jessica Stephenson, met with him several times during th course of the internship and evaluated his final report in consultation with Dr. Stone-Miller. (Spring 2008).

STUDENT ADVISING (other than student supervision)

Faculty Advisor to the KSU Art History Club, 2010-present. (I helped the students organize the club in the fall of 2009).
One of two faculty advisors of the Visions Student Art Guild, 2007-2008.

Student Advising Prior to Kennesaw State University:
As a member of the Atlanta College of Art Liberal Arts Department I spent time advising every student who registered for a liberal arts class (the total student population was approximately 400). Each semester I would review schedules and requirements with approximately 75 students.

Student Advising At Kennesaw State University:
Each semester I meet with approximately 10 students who are assigned to me as their advisor, to discuss their degree program requirements and course schedule options. In addition, since we initiated the Art History Minor in 2008, and in preparation for the new Art History Major (anticipated December, 2011), I regularly advise numerous students in all of my classes as well as outside of class time.
