Study Abroad in Montepulciano, Italy

Offered Summers and Fall Semesters

Montepulciano, featured in the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, is the highest of the hill towns in Tuscany. It combines breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside dotted with vineyards and olive groves with a history that stretches back to the pre-Roman Etruscans. It is small enough that students can feel “at home” almost immediately, but its central location allows day-long field trips to such cultural and historic centers as Rome, Florence, and Siena.

Classes are held in the 16th century Medici fortress in the historic center near the cathedral and 15th century town hall. Instead of the typical study abroad arrangement where participants live in university dormitories and eat in cafeterias, students in Montepulciano live in shared apartments within the medieval walls and eat in local restaurants. Field trip costs are built into program fees. Best of all, students in Montepulciano will feel welcomed as a part of the community. Many students come to think of Montepulciano as their “other” home and return there whenever they can.
