1. Background And Purpose of WWW Pages

  • This University encourages faculty, staff, and students to publish on the World Wide Web within the constraints of existing laws and policies. Through this medium KSU has rich opportunities for the institution and individuals; however, it presents a dichotomy for policy makers to ensure appropriate freedom of expression while maintaining a consistent, cohesive institutional presence.

  • This Policy imparts minimal stylistic consistency guidelines and provides some guidance to the legal implications of publishing on the World Wide Web. These guidelines address "Official University Home Pages," "Other Official Ancillary Pages" and "Unofficial/Courtesy University Pages." This Document provides guidelines for all pages published by Kennesaw State University authorized users.

  • Development of WWW pages is subject to applicable University policies such as those pertaining to copyright, "fair use," and intellectual property rights; Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act; Federal Computer Abuse Amendment Act; Federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act; and other state and federal laws.

  • Failure to adhere to these and the policies described herein may ultimately lead to revocation of the privilege to use University computing resources.

2. WEB Management Framework

  • The appropriate university logo must be used on all home pages in accurate colors as shown in the Official Kennesaw State University Identification Standards Manual & Style Guide.

  • All Web sites at the university MUST use the template design for the first home page of all their Web pages, with the approved color palette and logo.

  • Information on each page must be accurate, up-to-date, and must conform to editorial standards. Each unit designing a home page must assign a person to update its page(s) as appropriate.

  • KSU will observe the same copyright rules for its Web pages that it does for printed materials.

  • Page content must not violate applicable laws or constitute a copyright or trademark infringement.

  • The content on pages must not be offensive and must adhere to high community standards.

  • All pages must be in compliance with appropriate KSU campus policies and procedures.

  • Authors and originators using trademarks must have written permission from the person or organization owning the trademarks. When using photographs, permission must be obtained by the photographer or owner, as well as the persons in the image.

  • Information Technology is responsible for architecture of the overall university Web site. The Office of Marketing & Design Services reserves the right to monitor and review all official unit pages for the university's departments, divisions and schools.

  • Registered student organizations may create Web pages that approved by the official coordinator and the Office of Marketing & Design Services. These pages must be linked to an appropriate Web page managed by the Student Life Center.

  • ALL official pages must have at least one link back to the KSU home page.

  • Home pages must contain a readily apparent generic e-mail contact address or link to the appropriate address of the author or other persons responsible for placing any Web information.

  • Any pages in violation of policies and guidelines will be subject to immediate removal from the Network. use of official university marks is prohibited on unofficial pages. Student pages shall not usually be directly linked to university Web pages.

  • The Office of Marketing & Design Services in University Relations will oversee the appearance of the official university home page; the Department of Information Technology Services will manage the resource and technical issues regarding Web accounts, University servers, and system configuration. The webmaster will coordinate with the Office of Marketing & Design Services to determine which pages are ready for publication on the server.

3. Official University Pages

  • For the purpose of this Policy, an "Official University Page" may represent the University or an organizational unit of the University. There are two types of official University pages: Official Home and Official Ancillary. Official home pages refer to pages so designated by ITS and the first pages designated by major organizational units of the University. Official ancillary pages are any other pages associated with that home page, and are so designated (for example, supporting information and student organizations).

  • ITS will designate official home pages and University Relations must approve their design and content. If an Official Home Page or Official Ancillary Page links to an unofficial page, the official page must carry a disclaimer of Kennesaw State University for the content of the unofficial page.

  • Kennesaw State's WWW site is considered an official publication and external marketing tool, as well as a campus-wide information source. As with printed publications, only approved University information will be communicated on the KSU Home Page and all institutional links.

4. Unofficial "Courtesy" University Pages

  • As campus resources allow, unofficial or “courtesy” pages may be accommodated within the University's network. For the purpose of this Policy, an "Unofficial University Page" is any page published through the use of any resource belonging to Kennesaw State University which does not fall into the category of official home pages.

  • The University recognizes the impossibility of reviewing all information published electronically by Kennesaw State University authorized users and, therefore, disclaims any responsibility for the content of unofficial pages. The University does reserve the right to review and investigate any page or pages published with the use of Kennesaw State University resources and enforce these policies with respect to such pages. Guidelines (Appendix B) are provided to guide and assist faculty, staff, and students who create an individual page or pages.
