You’ve returned from studying abroad; Congratulations on completing a life-changing experience!  What’s next? Now is your chance to reflect upon your experience and settle back into life in the United States.  What changes do you see in your environment now that you have an outside perspective?  How have you changed by studying abroad? Please read below for more information for returned students.

OWLs Abroad (Our Worldly Leaders Abroad)

A beneficial opportunity you should take advantage of is becoming a member of the “OWLs Abroad” student organization.  This group offers an outlet for students to share their experiences, learn from one another, and discuss global passions.  As a member you can also learn different strategies to present your study abroad experience in a positive way to family members, colleagues or future employers!

Essay Contest

As a returned student you qualify to enter the Education Abroad Essay Contest!  The 2011-12 essay contest will be accepting applications from November 1 – December 12, 2011

The information below should serve as a resource for you to get connected and discover ways to process your experiences.  Please visit the links for access to tools designed to help students returning home and dealing with reverse culture shock.

How to deal with reverse-culture shock (Start at Module 2.3): This website offers valuable resources for returned students to process their transition.  It is important for students to be aware of reverse culture shock, and the information on this website is a great place to start.  Also pay attention to the top ten lists provided that explain some of the emotions you might be feeling and offers some suggestions for coping with them.

“Relationships, Roots, and Unpacking”:  A great article about transitioning home after a meaningful experience abroad. 

Reverse Culture Shock: This study abroad handbook provides great information about re-entry into your home country and dealing with the different stages of returning.

Resources for returning home: Here you can find various links to helpful websites, book suggestions, and interesting articles about returning home from abroad.

A toolkit for returned students: This toolkit provides important information about the re-entry process, including the emotional aspect, social actions, and academic advice.

Going Abroad Again
