In its inaugural year of varsity competition, Kennesaw State Esports has won its first Peach Belt Conference League of Legends championship. Competing in its first conference tournament with scholarship Esports players, the Owls beat Augusta, North Georgia and Florida Southern en route to the Peach Belt title, earning a berth in the College League of Legends national championship tournament scheduled for May and June.

Siena Gore says that there are a number of similarities between lacrosse and engineering, most notably time management and the ability to make sacrifices. An industrial engineering technology student and a member of the Kennesaw State women’s lacrosse team, she happens to have first-hand experience with both. So does her twin sister, Marissa Gore, her lacrosse teammate and electrical engineering student in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET).

When Kennesaw State’s football team took the field last Saturday, the Owls embarked on a unique time for KSU Athletics — a first in its history — with every men’s and women’s sports team competing during the spring semester. With the COVID-19 pandemic moving fall sports to spring, the football team joined KSU’s other 17 teams in competition—the culmination of several months of work in every corner of the athletics department.

Following a record-setting year in which more than 203 Owl athletes were named to the ASUN Academic Honor Roll, three Kennesaw State University teams were also recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Honors for their Academic Progress Rates (APR).

Brian and Kim Newsome estimate they have been intertwined with Kennesaw State University in some compacity for nearly a decade, whether it’s through attending Owl football games, watching their son earn his degree or through their company constructing facilities on campus. In that time, their Sandy Springs-based construction company, Albion, has grown into one of the staunchest supporters of Kennesaw State’s Department of Construction Management. Now, motivated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and other societal issues impacting KSU students, the company has created a scholarship endowment which, along with its support for capital projects on the Marietta campus, raises Albion’s recent giving to $125,000.

Kennesaw State University has joined the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) as an associate member for Esports beginning with the 2020-21 season. The Owls will become the seventh associate member of the Peach Belt, which now includes 17 Esports teams for the upcoming year. Kennesaw State is the first NCAA Division I institution to join PBC Esports as an associate and now gives the league members at the Division I, II and III levels. KSU was previously a full member of the Peach Belt from 1994 to 2005 before moving to the Division I ranks, winning four national championships as a part of the Georgia-based Division II conference.

Mickey Dunn is used to making adjustments. As a college student, he played baseball and studied industrial engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University, all while working in North Georgia’s flooring industry between semesters. He moved from engineering into the management field, eventually founding his own company while keeping a hand in the day-to-day operations of his plant. Now he and his company, ML Industries, are making another adjustment. After nearly two decades of making airbags for cars, they’ve transitioned to making the personal protective equipment needed by frontline medical personnel
