Serial entrepreneur Michael J. Coles has a unique interpretation of the classic story of David and Goliath. Coles – the namesake of the Michael J. Coles College of Business and the co-founder of the Great American Cookie Company – says most people view the story of the shepherd David defeating the villainous Goliath as a tale of overcoming adversity. However, Coles likes to look at it a little differently. “For me, that was never the takeaway,” he said. “The takeaway of that story was always that David, without ever knowing the outcome, had the courage to step into the valley.”

Kennesaw State University’s Cox Family Enterprise Center (CFEC) will celebrate the significance and success of family businesses at its 25th annual Georgia Family Business of the Year Honoration on Feb. 28 at Flourish Atlanta. The program will include recognition of several family businesses and remarks by guest speakers from successful family-owned organizations. The CFEC, part of Kennesaw State’s Coles College of Business, is the oldest family business center in the world.

Kennesaw State University has named Phaedra Corso as vice president for research, effective Feb. 4. Corso currently serves as the director of the Economic Evaluation Research Group in the College of Public Health and the associate director of the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research at the University of Georgia.

Kennesaw State will host the 2018 FutureX Live conference, the largest augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality conference in the Southeast, on Nov. 16 at the University’s Marietta Campus. KSU is the first university to host the conference. Sponsored by Moxie, a modern marketing solutions company, and KSU’s Joel A. Katz Music Entertainment and Business program (MEBUS), FutureX spotlights the creative possibilities in the music, film, television and gaming industries. This year’s theme, “The Future of Entertainment,” offers a day-long program including student-driven technology showcases, discussions by industry leaders, and an augmented-reality concert by top recording artist Leah Culver.
