Strong return on investment for Kennesaw State graduates

Kennesaw State University graduates earn higher salaries in their chosen career fields than those from the majority of Georgia’s colleges and universities, according to this year’s rankings by salary information company PayScale. Kennesaw State ranked fifth out of 41 public and private institutions in Georgia in PayScale’s 2017 College Salary Report.

College of Science and Mathematics recognizes 2017 Birla Carbon Scholars

Kennesaw State University senior Rebecca Webster’s research project on the parasitic Harper’s Dodder (Cuscuta harperi) plant’s ability to select certain plant hosts based on smell won the Top Poster Award at the Birla Carbon Symposium, at which the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) officially recognized 10 new Birla Carbon Scholars. The scholarship program is designed to provide 10 Kennesaw State students with $4,000 stipends for summer research in science and mathematics. Each student scholar works side-by-side with a faculty researcher on a project, which deals with topics ranging from radiocesium soil contamination to the evolution of appendages.

Summer Commencement ceremonies to be held at Kennesaw State Campus on July 28

The Honorable LaDoris “Dot” Harris, the former director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy and a Southern Polytechnic State University alumna, will address more than 2,000 graduates at Kennesaw State University’s summer Commencement, beginning Friday, July 28, at 10 a.m. Other speakers include Teresa M. Joyce, professor emeritus of management, and Mark R. Anderson, the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. Kennesaw State President Samuel S. Olens will preside over the three graduation ceremonies in the KSU Convocation Center on the Kennesaw Campus.

Twelve Woodrow Wilson fellows to enter STEM teaching pipeline at Kennesaw State

Twelve recent grads or career changers among the 63 newest Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows will pursue graduate degrees at Kennesaw State University, where they will prepare to teach STEM subjects at Georgia schools. Gov. Nathan Deal announced the new class of fellows June 29 at the State Capitol.

Student wins regional data challenge for ocean acidification visualization tool

Kennesaw State University computer science student John Mwaniki was recently honored by the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association as the winner of the SECOORA Data Challenge. The inaugural competition seeks new data visualizations, mobile applications, products or data synthesis tools that use publicly available Southeast coastal and ocean data to better understand the coastal ocean. Mwaniki won in the undergraduate category for creating a computer application that offers a visual translation of SECOORA’s archived pH data and engages citizens in oceanographic science through crowdsourcing.

More than 3,200 graduate during Commencement ceremonies

More than 3,200 students will graduate during Kennesaw State University’s spring Commencement. Among the speakers who will deliver addresses are the first black female Air Force general, an internationally recognized entrepreneur, and a high school dropout who became a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and will graduate from medical school this month. Kennesaw State President Samuel S. Olens will preside over the five graduation ceremonies in the KSU Convocation Center on the Kennesaw Campus, beginning Tuesday, May 9, at 10 a.m.

Statistics students win major award
April 20, 2017
Kennesaw State’s Three Amigos team took first place at the SAS Global Forum Student Symposium in Orlando, beating out teams from Cal Poly, USC and Oklahoma State, with their deep dive into a bank’s data sets that help marketers predict which potential term-deposit customers to target to maximize profits.
