Donor establishes endowment to support Kennesaw State competition teams, Honors students

Longtime Technical Manager Jim J. Hills has always been a firm believer that competition breeds ingenuity. While studying at the former Southern Technical Institute, now Kennesaw State University, he regularly competed in the college’s famed bathtub races, where he honed his engineering skills building motorized tubs he then raced against his classmates. Now, he and his wife Wanda aim to inspire the next generation of engineers through a $1 million endowment, the largest single gift in the history of KSU’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET), providing support for KSU competition teams and scholarships for engineering students in the University’s Keeping Sights Upward (KSU) Journey Honors College.

Kennesaw State graduate blends arts and science, evolves as researcher

Hope Didier forged her own path at Kennesaw State – an academic journey that blended divergent passions in dance and the sciences. The July graduate will earn two bachelor’s degrees this week in fields not typically paired: dance and molecular and cellular biology.

Howard family finds worthy cause in helping Kennesaw State students

As an executive at Atlanta automotive giant Genuine Parts Company, Frank Howard’s awareness of Kennesaw State University grew when he began hiring its accounting and information technology graduates. Howard and his wife Melodie live in Kennesaw and have been actively giving back to the community for decades. A major part of that is the creation of the Frank and Melodie Howard Endowed Scholarship. It’s the first scholarship for Keeping Sights Upward (KSU) Journey Honors College based solely on the financial need of the recipient.

Kalafut family continues support of Kennesaw State with latest scholarship fund

George and Alice Kalafut have been part of the Kennesaw State family for more than 30 years, and now their own family is the inspiration for their latest gift to the University. Named in honor of George and Alice’s daughters, the Katherine Kalafut Cody and Tracy Kalafut Collerain Endowed Scholarship will support students in KSU Journey Honors College and the Coles College of Business who are majoring in finance, accounting or information systems.

Kennesaw State graduate cultivates awareness of hunger, food insecurity

Artis Trice became dedicated to the issues of community hunger and food insecurity while he was a student at Kennesaw State University, and he will continue that commitment well beyond the graduation day he’s celebrating this week. Trice is one of only 18 recipients nationwide of a 2021-22 Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellowship, a yearlong program through the Congressional Hunger Institute. Beginning this summer, he will work for six months with a community organization dealing with food security at the local level and then spend six months in Washington, D.C., with a policy organization or federal agency to conduct research and support anti-hunger policy on the national level.

Kennesaw State students find continued success in Coca-Cola Scholarship program

Prior to enrolling at Kennesaw State University, first-generation student Kamille Suarez-Paulino said there were few people who could offer guidance for her college career. Now a third-year student in The Coca-Cola First Generation and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Scholars program, the economics major wears her first-generation status as a badge of pride. Suarez-Paulino is one of 35 students who have benefited from the program made possible by a $1.25 million donation from The Coca-Cola Foundation.

Kennesaw State Honors student awarded for scholarship and service

On his bedroom walls, KSU Journey Honors College student Robert Connor has a collection of sticky notes with motivational phrases he’s written, including, “You have 1,440. How are you using them?” – in reference to the number of minutes in each day. Connor is making the most of each day as a student and a leader, and accordingly has been recognized as this year’s top student in Kennesaw State University’s President’s Emerging Global Scholars (PEGS) program.

Kennesaw State University and Wellstar Health System announce the establishment of the Wellstar-Tom and Betty Phillips Elite Honors Nursing Scholarship, a new $5 million endowment that will create an opportunity for highly qualified undergraduate students to gain acceptance into the Wellstar School of Nursing as early as their freshman years.

Donors follow family example of helping others

Inspired by the lessons from their own fathers to work hard and help others, Rick and Julie Bennett have established an endowment to provide scholarships for many Kennesaw State University students in the years to come. Rick, a Kennesaw State Foundation trustee, and his wife Julie have committed $100,000 for the William N. Bennett and Jule Blair Memorial Scholarship, named after their fathers, to assist KSU Journey Honors College students pursuing accounting degrees.

Star student overcomes homelessness to excel

To say Kennesaw State senior Carrie Lyn Barron has a lot of irons in the fire is an understatement. Among those who know her, the most popular observation is “I don’t know how she does it.” Barron, a non-traditional cellular, molecular and developmental biology major and student in KSU Journey Honors College, works in the lab of professor of biochemistry Jonathan McMurry, works two jobs and cares for her husband, Jay, who has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). With support from Kennesaw State’s Campus Awareness, Resource and Empowerment (CARE) Services, the couple now have a stable place to live.
