Cheers and tears came together at the Kennesaw State University Convocation Center this week for spring Commencement. Graduates, their families, faculty and the entire University community gathered to celebrate conferring of degrees to more than 3,500 over two days of ceremonies. Kennesaw State University double alumna Stephanee Stephens has dedicated her career to enhancing education through technology, and she now is accomplishing that as part of one of the world’s top technology companies. As a modern workplace senior specialist with Microsoft, Stephens provides educational support to P-12 and higher education professionals throughout the southeastern United States. Stephens, who previously led the iTeach unit in KSU’s Bagwell College of Education, shows educators how to utilize Microsoft’s resources and technological tools to advance teaching and learning through innovative methods.

— Kennesaw State University alumna Simone Stevens is fiercely confident, and not only in her abilities as a professional dancer. However, she learned this year she can still surprise herself. She was hired this summer to join Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, an internationally renowned contemporary dance company. The job is one she had been dreaming about since early in her career as a dance student at Kennesaw State.

Jade Lugo became a researcher almost by accident. Now, the Kennesaw State 2021 biochemistry graduate has secured a postbaccalaureate research position with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Lugo, who had pursued several majors before deciding that she wanted to be a neuroscientist, will participate in NIH’s Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award program, which allows college graduates pursuing advanced degrees to spend one to two years conducting biomedical research with leading NIH scientists.

Jaylen Jackson developed a love of languages as a Kennesaw State University student, and now he has received a Fulbright grant to continue toward his career goal of teaching English as a second language to adults. “Being a Fulbright recipient gives me a great opportunity to get experience and pursue my dream,” said Jackson, who will serve as an English teaching assistant at a university in Brazil for one year starting in March. “I know that a Fulbright is difficult to get, so I’m honored to be part of it.” Jackson, who graduated last year with an integrative studies degree, is one of three Kennesaw State alumni recently awarded a Fulbright to study or teach abroad.

Hope Didier forged her own path at Kennesaw State – an academic journey that blended divergent passions in dance and the sciences. The July graduate will earn two bachelor’s degrees this week in fields not typically paired: dance and molecular and cellular biology.

From a young age, Emily Bagwell knew she wanted to be a scientist — to work in a laboratory, to wear a white lab coat every day, and to be an expert on her topic. At Kennesaw State University, she picked up the wide range of skills that helped her achieve that goal, earning a recent promotion to firearms technical leader at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, five years after joining the GBI as a firearms analyst.

It’s been six years since Southern Polytechnic and Kennesaw State joined forces to create Georgia’s second-largest university. The consolidation of the two schools created a total alumni base of nearly 130,000 living graduates. In recognition of the history, legacy and traditions that were an integral part of SPSU, the Kennesaw State University Alumni Association has chartered the Southern Polytechnic State University Alumni Society (SPSUAS).
