    While he was vice president of research and development at a Marietta medical device company, Michael Lipoma was rewriting his life’s script when he enrolled in Kennesaw State University’s Master of Arts in Professional Writing (MAPW) program in 2005. The KSU education, along with experience he gained as both a writer and producer since graduation has paid off for Lipoma. The International Screenwriters Association named him to its “Top 25 Screenwriters to Watch in 2021” list.

    Nearly 2,900 fall graduates earning degrees from Kennesaw State

    Kennesaw State will have its first class of graduates as Georgia’s second-largest university when nearly 2,900 students receive their degrees this month. The December 2020 class is composed of 2,890 graduation candidates – 2,427 undergraduate and 463 graduate students. That marks an increase from KSU’s more than 2,600 graduates last fall.

    Kennesaw State graduate thrives in film industry

    In a Savannah movie theater 22 years ago, a 4-year-old girl sat, entranced, watching the blockbuster Titanic with her mother. It was an event that would make a lasting impression on her life and career. “It was the first movie I sat through and watched the whole thing – and it was a long movie – not saying a single word,” said Katie Boaen, now working in the prop and set decorating departments of Georgia’s thriving film industry. “I was captivated by it at that age – the scale of everything coming together; I remember it to this day.” Boaen is “a huge movie buff” who has always liked storytelling and mixing it with art. She graduated from the Joel A. Katz Music and Entertainment Business Program at Kennesaw State University in 2018. Her end goal was to turn a hobby into a profession and earn some income in the process.

    Scholarship Endowment Established in Honor of Late KSU Alumnus

    Allen Brooks can recall the first time he met the late Kennesaw State University alumnus John Boyko on the way to his usual fishing spot. At the time, Boyko was a freshman business student at Kennesaw State working part time at a local bait shop, allowing the two to build a friendship over their common interests. By the time Boyko entered his junior year, he would receive an invitation to complete an internship at Kennesaw-based company ServIT, where Brooks served as president, and ultimately blossomed into whom Brooks said was the company’s “first marketing genius.”

    Alum shifts company focus to help save lives

    Mickey Dunn is used to making adjustments. As a college student, he played baseball and studied industrial engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University, all while working in North Georgia’s flooring industry between semesters. He moved from engineering into the management field, eventually founding his own company while keeping a hand in the day-to-day operations of his plant. Now he and his company, ML Industries, are making another adjustment. After nearly two decades of making airbags for cars, they’ve transitioned to making the personal protective equipment needed by frontline medical personnel

Marten uses these ideas to question the world around her through art. Marten, who earned a BFA in Drawing and Painting at Kennesaw State University’s School of Art and Design in 2012, is making waves in the art community with her work, which was recently exhibited in New York.
