Students at Kennesaw State University are often led to research through personal connections, demonstrating how passion can spark action. Student researchers presented their findings last week at the Spring Symposium of Student Scholars, a three-day event hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research that allows students to explain their work in a public forum.

Discarded plastics are among the leading contributors to pollution worldwide, but Kennesaw State University researcher Bharat Baruah believes transparent wood could serve as a viable alternative. The professor of chemistry and biochemistry is exploring whether specially processed transparent wood can replace plastic in consumer electronics, packaging, and many other goods as a more ecofriendly solution.

In what serves as an experiential learning opportunity, students in Patrick Fennell’s Marketing Research class at Kennesaw State University have been creating and analyzing datasets to support organizations looking to reach a wider audience. Designed to prepare students for their future careers in the field, the focus on real-world application ties in to the guiding framework of the Department of Marketing and Professional Sales in the Coles College of Business, coined “Academia Meets Practice” (AMP). Fennell, an assistant professor of marketing and professional sales, has helped lead the effort over the past two semesters, first with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, an Alpharetta-based nonprofit, and now, with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra.

A graphic artist for decades, Joseph Karg has used his talents for everything from drawing superheroes for Marvel Comics to illustrating tour posters for musical acts. In a slightly different direction, he’s also lent these skills to tell an impactful story of an opioid overdose. Recently, the Kennesaw State University assistant professor of illustration and sequential art helped an Emory University researcher illustrate the occurrence of opioid-related overdoses in Atlanta’s Little Five Points neighborhood. He uses the project as a lesson for his students in the Geer College of the Arts to demonstrate the power of graphic illustrations and storytelling.

Two years ago, Kali Terza was at the top of her game. A dominant thrower on the Kennesaw State women’s track and field team, she was fresh off an ASUN Conference title, had earned a spot on the Under 20 USA Track and Field team, and competed in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Track and Field Championship meet. For a moment, it felt like she had the world in her hands.

Seeking refuge in Savannah, Georgia, Caelyn Summers sat anxiously in her childhood home last September while Hurricane Helene rumbled across the state before turning north toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the deadliest storms in two decades, the Category 4 hurricane killed more than 200 people and left Summers without power for nearly four days. Among the images that stood out the most were those of Asheville, North Carolina, where she spent many family vacations over the years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she leapt at the opportunity to be one of about two dozen KSU students to make the four-hour drive to Asheville in January to survey Helene damage and meet with community members to discuss recovery efforts.

The American Psychological Association reports nearly a fifth of all police calls involve individuals experiencing mental health crises. These situations are exacerbated by the lack of behavioral health training, causing first responders to make critical decisions in mere seconds. To address this, Kennesaw State University computer science student Mason Pederson is contributing to a broader initiative between Cobb County public safety officials and KSU's Cooperative Human-AI Teaming (CHAT) Lab, led by assistant professor Hafiz Khan.

Andrew Bramlett is well beyond his years, recalling history like a scholar who has long been in the field, longer than his lifetime. Some might say he’s prodigious. At 19 years old, the first-year history student at Kennesaw State University sits on the Kennesaw Historic Preservation Commission. A decade ago, though, he was appointed vice president of the Kennesaw Historical Society and served in this role until the group disbanded in 2023.
