    Kennesaw State students participate in annual Pumpkin Launch

    The familiar yell of “fire in the hole” rang out on Kennesaw State University’s Marietta Campus during the annual Pumpkin Launch on Monday afternoon. Approximately 270 first-year mechanical engineering students showed off weeks of hard work as they lined up 16-foot-tall slingshots, catapults and trebuchets, capable of launching pumpkins across the Neusoft Technologies Field.

    Kennesaw State University’s Electric Vehicle Team won big at its latest competition, setting a track record and bringing home first place in the autonomous division, and second place in the driven competition. The team, part of the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET), traveled to Purdue University to compete in the evGrand Prix, an annual, electric go-kart racing event.

    Longtime Technical Manager Jim J. Hills has always been a firm believer that competition breeds ingenuity. While studying at the former Southern Technical Institute, now Kennesaw State University, he regularly competed in the college’s famed bathtub races, where he honed his engineering skills building motorized tubs he then raced against his classmates. Now, he and his wife Wanda aim to inspire the next generation of engineers through a $1 million endowment, the largest single gift in the history of KSU’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET), providing support for KSU competition teams and scholarships for engineering students in the University’s Keeping Sights Upward (KSU) Journey Honors College.

The consolidation of the two schools created a total alumni base of nearly 130,000 living graduates.
