Career and Academic Opportunities

Bachelor of Science (English Education) students pursuing a Double Owl with the Master of Arts in American Studies will develop research and analytical skills that will broaden and deepen their disciplinary literacies and equip them to guide students in interdisciplinary inquiry. English teachers who are certified in grades 6-12 in the state of Georgia can receive an in-field upgrade upon completion of the M.A. in American Studies. This pathway offers an opportunity for students who would prefer to seek a graduate degree in a content area (M.A.) instead of an education graduate degree (M.Ed.). The flexible structure of the American Studies program also allows students to choose between writing a thesis or completing a capstone project more directly related to their careers, such as a project focused on pedagogy and course design.

  • KSU GPA: 3.0
  • 60 hours completed toward B.S. in English Education

Double Counted Courses

  • AMST 6401: Literature and Culture of the Americas
  • Choose one of the following: AMST 7410, AMST 7420, AMST 7450, or AMST 7460

Suggested Timeline

Apply to the Double Owl pathway during the Spring semester of the second year. Apply to the Graduate Program in Spring semester of the fourth year: apply by April 1 to begin MAST in the summer, or by July 1 to begin in the fall.
