"The Hoo" Basketball Band

Thank you for your interest in the 2026–2027 Edition of The Hoo.

We are very excited that you are considering joining us as we bring energy, excitement, and Owl spirit to every KSU Men’s and Women’s Basketball game this season. Being a member of The Hoo!! means more than playing music. It is about creating an unforgettable game day atmosphere, supporting our teams, and building lasting friendships.

Below you will find all of the information you need to prepare for your audition and plan for the season ahead.

About The Hoo

Eligibility

Any KSU student enrolled during both the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters is eligible to participate.

  • 1- Drum Set

Subject to change based on audition results.

KSU provides piccolos, tenor saxophones, mellophones, trombones, baritones, sousaphones, and a drum set, plus the amp for electric bass.

Audition Process

Returning members
Members who held a paid spot in the 2025-2026 band do not need to complete another audition. However, you must still complete the audition form.

Wind players
Submit a video audition using the audition form below. Include an unlisted YouTube link by Friday, November 13 at 11:59 p.m. The performer from the waist up, as well as the entire instrument, must be visible in the video.

Drum set and electric bass players
Complete the audition form by Friday, November 13 at 11:59 p.m. Enter "N/A" in place of a video link. Live auditions will take place during the first rehearsal on Friday, December 4.

Membership Expectations

Required Rehearsals

All members are required to attend.

Friday, December 4 - 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Additional rehearsals may be scheduled before the semester begins if needed.

Full band rehearsals are located at 3305 Busbee Drive.

Performance Expectations

Members are not expected to memorize basketball band music. Due to the fast-paced nature of NCAA basketball games and the large library of music performed throughout the season, members use the BEAM app and e-flip resources during performances.

Games and Payment Policies

The numbers listed in the instrumentation section represent the required paid instrumentation for each game, not the total number of students who may be accepted into The Hoo. Additional students may be accepted as non-paid members and alternates.

Paid members are expected to attend all required games during the season.

Substitutes:

  • If a paid member cannot attend an assigned game, another member may substitute for them. The substitute receives payment for that game.
  • Athletics provides meals at each game. Call times vary but include time to eat and complete a brief warm-up before the pregame sequence. A full performance calendar will be distributed at the first rehearsal.

Tournament Travel

All members, regardless of payment status, earn travel points. Tournament rosters are determined by the members with the most travel points within each required section.

Tournament games are not paid.
