On-campus bike lanes, parking and off-campus trails cited

In recognition of Kennesaw State’s commitment to sustainability and achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus, the University has been designated as a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists.

The League, which is a national organization dedicated to creating safer roads and stronger communities, has awarded Kennesaw State the Bronze Award. This is the first time University has applied for this recognition.  

In awarding KSU, the League noted the University’s infrastructure planning for street closures to minimize traffic in core campus areas, creation of on-campus bike lanes and ample bike parking, and commitment to improved connectivity to access to an extensive countywide trail network that includes the trails at Rottenwood Creek and Noonday Creek.

KSU’s bicyclists also have access to a comprehensive range of services, including free safety checks and adjustments, through the University’s Department of Sports and Recreation Bike Shop. In addition to tune-ups and fix-it stations, cycling classes are offered, and students may borrow bikes for a few days or an entire semester. Access to the Zagster bike rental program also is available on the Marietta Campus.

The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability, the Department of Sports and Recreation, and the Department of Transportation were instrumental in Kennesaw State’s award application. The three offices created the Bike-Ped Advisory Board, which works to foster effective coordination on bike and pedestrian programming and infrastructure.

“Congratulations to Kennesaw State University for its inclusion in the select class of 45 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Universities nationwide,” said League Executive Director Bill Nesper.

“The standards for attaining these awards are very high and require deliberate, determined efforts to earn them,” Nesper said. “Universities and colleges are in a unique leadership position to help encourage and enable people of all ages—especially young adults—to adopt healthy, sustainable habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.”
