Kennesaw State University has appointed Julia Ayers as vice president for government relations, effective Oct. 22.

Ayers is currently senior executive director of economic development for the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), where she works closely with the vice presidents of economic development at 22 colleges to develop and implement curriculum and industry outreach initiatives. Prior to TCSG, she spent eight years working with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, most recently as deputy chief of staff for legislative and external affairs.

In her new role, Ayers will promote Kennesaw State University’s goals and objectives to state and federal policymakers, University System of Georgia officials, and business and civic leaders. She also will identify priorities for KSU and develop action plans that require governmental, legislative and community support.

“Julia’s experience in government relations and her commitment to education, particularly here in Georgia, will be an asset in advancing Kennesaw State University’s mission and impact,” said Alex McGee, KSU’s vice president for external affairs and chief of staff. “Julia will be a strong advocate for Kennesaw State. Her proven skills will enhance the University’s reputation and partnerships throughout the state as well as nationally and internationally.”

Ayers’ career with Gov. Deal began in August 2009, when she joined the Deal for Governor campaign as a field representative and administrative assistant. Once Deal took office, Ayers became legislative liaison to the Georgia State Legislature and then legislative liaison to the Georgia House of Representatives before being named manager of state legislative affairs in July 2014. She left the Governor’s office in January 2015 to become the assistant commissioner of external affairs and facilities at TCSG but was recruited back to the Governor’s office in September 2015.

“Kennesaw State University is a thriving campus environment with strong academic standards, athletics and community involvement,” Ayers said. “I look forward to joining this dynamic team and promoting its missions and objectives at the federal, state, and local level.”

In August 2008, Ayers began her career as a staff assistant and legislative correspondent for former U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey.

Ayers earned a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in political science, Spanish and international studies from the University of Mississippi. Ayers also graduated from the Georgia Academy of Economic Development and was in Leadership Georgia’s class of 2017.
