PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Department of Inclusive Education: 770-423-6577
Department Chair: Dr. Deborah Wallace-- dwallace@kennesaw.edu
Assistant Department Chair: Dr. Patty Crawford -- pcrawfo4@kennesaw.edu
The M.Ed. in TESOL prepares professional teacher leaders with advanced knowledge, skills and dispositions of:
* Characteristics, procedures, curriculum, and methods of instructing students who are culturally and linguistically diverse in the general education curriculum and classroom;
* Assessment, documentation, communication, and accommodations for all students in inclusive classrooms and curriculum;
* Ethical services for all students;
* Collaborative structures;
* Federal Law and corresponding rights of English Language Learners.
This new program was developed for individuals who already have a clear renewable teaching certificate. The program uses a collaborative model that reflects the needs of teachers to serve all students in P-12 education settings. It prepares teachers to meet the needs of students who are culturally and linguistically diverse. Course work emphasizes the commonalities of the instructional needs of diverse students and highlights specific practices to foster language acquistion while simultaneously teaching content.
The original ESOL endorsement program has been revised and improved to meet national standards of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Thus, this program is transdisciplinary in nature and built upon research in General Education and ESOL.

The requirements for completion of an M.Ed.in TESOL includes:
1.completion of a minimum of 33 hours of approved graduate course work;
2.an earned cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 in all graduate course
work at Kennesaw State University;
4.successful completion and presentation of a professional portfolio (See

Portfolio
A portfolio serves as a permanent record of the candidate’s individual
progress while working toward a Master of Education degree. The portfolio
encourages the Kennesaw State University candidate as a learning facilitator
to implement a systematic, reflection-in-action approach to problem solving
and decision making. The portfolio provides a detailed authentic picture
of the candidate’s professional practice and reflective analysis of the
integration of courses taken supported by theory and resource literature.
Changes in classroom practice as well as in oneself are documented. Impact
on student achievement is documented. Portfolio assignments are integrated
in each course syllabi. Candidates enroll in a capstone course to support
portfolio development and a presentation during the candidate’s final
semester of study. See the M.Ed. Portfolio Handbook for further information.
