What is Digital Animation?

The Digital Animation Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Kennesaw State University prepares students for various careers and advanced studies in animation. The program offers two concentrations: 2D Animation and 3D Animation, with students entering either concentration at the beginning of their 2nd year. The 2D Animation concentration focuses on skills including digital frame-by-frame animation, character design, and storyboarding. The 3D Animation concentration emphasizes skills such as 3D modeling, lighting, and animation. With a well-rounded curriculum that includes both digital animation and general studies, graduates of this program can expect to enter the ever-changing animation field with a versatile skill set and a solid foundation for success.

Admission Requirements

The School of Art & Design at Kennesaw State University admits students in the Fall (August) and Spring (January) semesters each year. We offer two degree programs for which you must submit a portfolio for entrance: the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art (concentrations in art education, art history, ceramics, graphic communications, illustration, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, sequential art, and textile and surface design), and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Animation.

The School of Art and Design (SOAAD) Entry Portfolio requires 4 artworks (see below) and a 200-word artist statement.

Degree Progression Requirements

  • All students must maintain the minimum GPA requirement for the University to continue in the School of Art and Design. 
  • Any students in Academic Dismissal with the University are also dismissed from the School of Art and Design.
  • All students must make timely and reasonable progress toward the degree.
  • Non-enrollment or withdrawal from all classes for two or more consecutive semesters will require reapplication to the School of Art and Design.

Sample Classes

  • This course is an introduction to contemporary animation. Course content focuses on frame-to-frame animation as well as 2-dimensional rigged animation techniques. Students will create unique animations using industry standard time-based media computer applications.
  • This course is an introduction to the use and creation of storyboards for animation. Students will interpret narratives including their own material into functional sequential art. Students will explore both traditional and digital media in the course.
  • Students will apply their drawing skills and knowledge of the figure to create original characters designed for applied 2D animation techniques.
  • This graduating senior capstone course focuses on the development of a student resume and professional animation reel showcasing work designed for the animation industry. There is also a research component to hone expertise in current job market demands and requirements, prepare for establishment as a freelance artist in the animation industry, and/or graduate school opportunities. The animation reel will demonstrate an individual style and a high level of conceptual ability and professionalism.
