Greece study abroad challenges KSU students to tell stories of the past with bones

In a small village on the island of Crete, just southeast of mainland Greece, anthropology major Jess Drilling learned to identify signs of osteoarthritis in skeletal remains, helping piece together the stories of people who walked the earth centuries ago. Drilling is one of four Kennesaw State University students who spent part of their summer at an archaeological research center, studying human skeletal remains dating from the fifth to seventh centuries to uncover clues about how people lived, what they ate, and the injuries and illnesses they experienced.

Record number of Gilman Scholars at Kennesaw State travel the globe

Aaliyah Uchendu is one of a record number of KSU students awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship this year. The Gilman Scholarship is a prestigious award funded by the US State Department that provides recipients up to $5,000 to support study or internships abroad; only about 20%-25% of applicants are selected for the award.

Associate professor leverages Fukushima research to advocate for farmers post-disaster

In 2016, Kennesaw State University researcher Daniel Ferreira traveled to Japan to study radioactive contaminants in farmland soil, five years after the tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster transformed the region’s environment forever. As a researcher focused on ions at the mineral‑water interface and their role in soil health, the trip proved invaluable, giving him a real‑world application for his work. Years later, though, Ferreira reflected on an experience in meeting Fukushima’s farmers, away from the research sites and goals of his travels.

Kennesaw State, Birla Carbon launch global research internship in India

The latest milestone in a relationship spanning more than a decade, Kennesaw State University and Birla Carbon have established a program that will send undergraduate students to India for intensive summer internships. Launching in 2026, the Birla Carbon India Study Abroad Program will offer up to 12 students from KSU’s College of Science and Mathematics the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in Goa, India.

For five weeks this summer, 16 Kennesaw State students from the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET) traded their Marietta classrooms for the bustling metropolis of Taipei, Taiwan. Guided by Jeffrey Yiin, Clinical Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, the group immersed themselves in one of the world’s most influential technology hubs while experiencing Taiwan’s culture and daily life.
