Congratulations to architecture thesis student Hala Alfalih for receiving an Undergraduate Research Creative Activities (URCA) award from the Office of Undergraduate Research to develop her material research exploring life on Mars! Hala Alfalih: Informing Space: A human centered approach to designing an adaptive modular dwelling on Mars (advisor: Jeff Collins).

Hala is honored to receive an URCA grant to explore the intersection of design, engineering, and research as an integral part of overcoming many of the issues we face as humans today. Her thesis investigation will develop a framework for the design of what she believes to be inevitable - the expansion of human civilization into the universe - through research of a foreign environment and the definition of a dwelling in that context. Her research will not only determine an interesting path for Hala's career, but also provides an opportunity for her to explore more deeply sustainable dwellings and methods of fabrication on Mars.
