Kennesaw State architecture students earn recognition in international design competition

A group of four smiling students seated together on a bench with their arms around one another.

With a vision that turned crumbling walls into works of art, a team of Kennesaw State University architecture students reimagined an old Italian villa and earned international recognition along the way.

Gabriela Almeida, Wade Brock, Quincy Smith, and Justin Barkie – all students in Kennesaw State's College of Architecture and Construction Management – spent their summer transforming the ruins of history into a story of renewal. Their project, “When Walls Roam,” won the Community’s Choice Award in Terraviva Competitions’ Venetian Villa challenge, gaining praise from viewers worldwide.

Renaming the Woodshop: Built Environment Innovation Lab

Woodworking tables and tools in a sprawling workshop.

Starting with the Fall 2025 semester, the College of Architecture and Construction Management [CACM] Woodshop will be rebranded to the Built Environment Innovation Lab. The space has been growing over the past year with the addition of a robotic arm geared towards large scale 3D printing and pick-and-place construction.

This started as an initiative to rebrand the space to reflect the updated capabilities of the lab as a whole; not just as a Woodshop, but as a space that includes multi-material assembly and looks toward the future of production in the built environment.  From an initial survey that went out to students, faculty, and staff of the CACM during Fall semester of 2024, a few iterations were made from the suggestions of the survey. With the help of all of the CACM leadership working with the staff of the Woodshop, the name of Built Environment Innovation Lab was created.
