Kennesaw State mechanical engineering student builds future through internship experience

KSU mechanical engineering student Yusuf Al-Kadi is turning classroom knowledge into real-world impact through a hands-on internship at CM Mission Critical Engineering.

Yusuf Al-Kadi walks through the halls of Kennesaw State University’s engineering building with a quiet confidence—one that’s been shaped by hands-on experience, supportive mentors, and a growing passion for innovation.

This summer, the mechanical engineering major is interning at CM Mission Critical Engineering, where he’s helping design high-performance data centers. His role involves developing systems for chip cooling, HVAC, and plumbing—critical infrastructure that supports the digital backbone of modern businesses.

“I’m working alongside engineers to design systems that keep data centers running efficiently,” Yusuf said. “It’s exciting to see how what I’ve learned in class applies to real-world challenges.”

Yusuf found the internship through a KSU career fair, an opportunity he credits to the university’s robust career development resources. “The career fair prep sessions gave me the confidence to approach recruiters,” he said. “Faculty and staff were incredibly supportive, offering advice that helped me stand out.”

One of those faculty members was Mitchell Cole, who Yusuf says wasn’t a formal mentor but left a lasting impression. “He showed me the value of experience and taking my time to grow,” Yusuf said.

Yusuf’s journey at KSU has been shaped by more than just academics. He recalls a pivotal moment during his first year, walking into an engineering research lab and seeing students—both undergraduate and graduate—fully immersed in their work. “That day made me think deeply about what I want from my education and career,” he said.

He also credits the First-Year Scholars Program for helping him build a strong foundation early on. “KSU offers something for everyone,” Yusuf said. “That broad environment helped me find my path.”

Now, as he gains industry experience, Yusuf is already thinking ahead. “This internship is opening doors,” he said. “In a STEM field, early experience is everything. It’s giving me options and helping me shape my future.”

Yusuf’s advice to fellow students is simple but powerful: “Talk to everybody. There are so many talented people out there, and in the end, recruiters are looking for someone they can see themselves working with.”

As Yusuf continues his journey, his story is a reminder of the impact that opportunity, preparation, and community can have on a student’s success.
