KENNESAW, Ga. | Jun 20, 2025

KSU student McKenzie Gilbert is gaining hands-on experience in human resources and professional development through her internship at BrandSafway.

For McKenzie Gilbert, helping others grow is at the heart of her career goals. This summer, she’s gaining valuable experience as a Human Resources Intern focused on Learning and Development at BrandSafway, where she’s supporting initiatives that help employees build skills and reach their potential, with a focus on meaningful training for the company.

“I’m finding my footing in the corporate world with an amazing supportive team,” McKenzie said. “It is exciting to use the knowledge I’ve learned in a meaningful way, and see my work make an impact.”

McKenzie found her internship through Handshake and used the Career Planning and Development’s mock interview and resume building resources to practice for her interview. “The mock interview and resume sessions helped me feel more confident in my interviewing skills and feel that my resume reflected my potential,” she said. “I think that having those resources was vital to my ability to landing an internship, and I’m grateful to have access to those tools.”

One professor that made a lasting impression on McKenzie was Dr. Dianhan Zheng. “She was always interested in my journey through college and internship applications, and her support has motivated me to succeed.”

McKenzie is also influenced by the connections she has made in the clubs and organizations she is a part of. “Finding people whose passions align with yours is not only refreshing but inspiring,” she said.

Now, as she gains industry experience, McKenzie is already making strides towards her future career. “This internship is bringing me one step closer to the career I’ve been working so hard for,” she said. “Being a psychology major, finding your niche within psychology is a challenge, but having an experience like this is helping me find the perfect space for me.”

McKenzie advice to fellow students is simple yet important: “Take opportunities as they come. Never be afraid to reach out to that professor or email that recruiter. Prove to yourself and those in your industry that you are the right candidate for them.”

As McKenzie continues her journey into the workforce and graduate school, her story is a reminder of the importance of networking, outreach, and involvement in the community around you.
