Motivations & Challenges with Sharing SoTL Findings

Learning and teaching happens everywhere, not just within the confines of traditional educational settings. Consequently, the potential implications of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) investigations can be far-reaching beyond academia. Are you sharing your SoTL results in a public-facing way? What have your experiences been like so far?

In this session, we will discuss motivations, opportunities, and challenges involved in sharing SoTL findings via public, mainstream mediums (e.g., videos, social media, etc.), with an emphasis on tailoring communication strategies to suit diverse audience needs and interests. Using specific examples, we will also explore public dissemination approaches to making SoTL findings more accessible and actionable for diverse audiences.

Alice Kim’s formal training is in experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience and focused on human memory and learning. Her research is anchored in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and her goal is to help disseminate what we know about learning and teaching via mainstream public platforms, as well as through traditional academic avenues. She is the Founder and Managing Director of Teaching and Learning Research in Action, a not-for-profit research organization focused on conducting and disseminating research on effective teaching and learning practices. She is also the Program Head of Psychology at the University of Guelph-Humber, and a Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, the official journal of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
