Study Abroad Programs and Experiences

Broaden your worldview and deepen your language skills through Kennesaw State University's immersive study abroad programs. Whether you're exploring the rich cultures of Africa, Europe, Asia, or the Americas, each program combines academic rigor with hands-on experiences—from tutoring in Benin and interning in China, to studying art in Italy and history in Spain.

Guided by expert faculty and tailored to diverse interests and skill levels, these programs offer life-changing opportunities to live, learn, and engage with global communities.

Africa (Benin) & Europe (France)

French language immersion, community service and unique cultural experiences in Benin and France. Students will enrich their linguistic and cultural experiences, but also promote literacy in underserved schools in Benin. Students they will visit unique and culturally rich historic sites such as Ganvié, Ouidah and Abomey. Housing in Benin is at Centre Songhaï, an internationally acclaimed sustainable development center in the capital city of Porto-Novo. The trips culminates with visits to cultural and historical sites in the southern part of France.

China

This five-week intensive Chinese language and culture immersion in Shanghai and Beijing is designed to move students quickly into a higher level of proficiency in Chinese and gain first-hand knowledge of Chinese culture and economy from fieldtrips and lectures. We offer multi-level classes; no background in the language required. Students earn 9 credit hours. Students have the opportunity to practice their teaching skills by tutoring local college students in English language and American culture and receive a service learning scholarship. 

France

Paris, one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the world, has fired the imagination of artists, writers, and students for centuries. La “Ville Lumière”, Paris is home to countless museums, cafés, and medieval streets that wind around contemporary architecture. A city à decouvrir, Paris is an invitation to experience all the world’s cultures while maintaining a proud and distinctly French feeling. Picture yourself spending a summer studying in the “City of Light,” the “museum without walls,” immersed in history and surrounded by some of the world’s finest art, architecture, and music. As a participant in the Paris Study Program, you won’t have to imagine these things—you can live them.

Maymester in Italy

Offered by the KSU World Languages and Cultures Department, this full-immersion Italian program is targeted to students with a specific interest in the Italian language and culture, who wish to enhance their knowledge of Italy by fully experiencing the Italian way of life. Participants spend two weeks in the historic Montepulciano, at the heart of Tuscany. Students participate in small-group, interactive language, culture, and literature courses that are targeted to their specific skills level; they engage in activities aimed to build long-lasting tights with the Italian community they are living within and explore the area through guided tours of the town and of the surrounding Chianti countryside. Experiential activities such as an Italian cooking class and tours of local artisan shops are integrated in the program. The program will also include a day trip to Florence to explore the many artistic treasures of this capital of the Italian Renaissance.

Gargnano del Garda, Italy

Through a fellowship with the Università degli Studi di Milano, KSU students working towards a minor in Italian Studies or a B.A. in ML&C, Italian, are eligible to apply for a scholarship to participate in a three-week summer course of Italian Language and Culture in Gargnano, on scenic Lake Garda. The course includes daily four hours of language and culture instruction plus a two-hour lecture on topics of Italian literature, history, art, music, and cinema held by professors of the University of Milan. Since 2012 at least one KSU Italian student has been granted this extraordinary opportunity every summer.

A Coruña, Spain

Work on your Spanish-language skills by participating in this 5-weeklanguage and culture program in Galicia, an autonomous community in northern Spain. Our group will be hosted by the Universidade da Coruña, in the beautiful city of A Coruña, on the Atlantic coast. In addition to attractions in A Coruña, our group will visit Santiago the Compostela and Madrid.

What problems and opportunities face Europe today? This twelve-day interactive seminar investigates such questions with a combination of lectures, workshops, and site visits in Western Europe.

Peru

This 5-week homestay program is hosted by CENTRUM Católica Graduate Business School. In addition to language courses, CENTRUM faculty will teach a course on the Peruvian economy and its business culture. A trip to Peru cannot be complete without a visit to the imperial city of Cuzco and the world wonder, Machu Picchu. Come and learn more about Peru’s world-renowned gastronomy, archeological sites, colonial past, and ethnically-diverse society!

Québec

Bridging Cultural and Linguistic Differences in Québec City. Québec City is the ideal location for this linguistic and cultural abroad. During two weeks, students will take a French course based on their level with a local language school. To complete this immersive experience, students will stay with approved host families, eating two meals a days with them. As part of the linguistic requirements for this abroad, students will work closely with their language teachers and will participate in cultural activities, such as playing board games, learning to cook, and visiting sites.
