Simple Syllabus: What and Why
At their meeting on May 15, 2025, the Board of Regents approved a request from their Committee on Academic Affairs that all institutions within the University System of Georgia must post course syllabi on their public websites. This will ensure that students receive information about course content, course requirements, and the evaluation methods employed.
Simple Syllabus is a centralized, template-driven platform that enables instructors to quickly personalize and publish interactive class syllabi directly in D2L, while ensuring that the components required to be publicly available are published automatically.
A list of the components the Board identified as needing to be made publicly available can be opened below.
-
Mandatory Syllabus Components
- Course Prefix, Number, and Name
- Semester and Academic Year
- Course Description
- Course Learning Outcomes: These are the approved outcomes for the course.
- Required Course Materials: List of textbooks with ISBN, articles, lab supplies, equipment, course packs, etc. that students are expected to read or reference as part of the course.
- Grading Policy: Specify how final grades will be determined, including weighting scales or points assigned to various course requirements.
- Attendance Policy
- Academic Honesty/Integrity Statement
- Core IMPACTS Statement (if applicable)
The resources below are designed to support faculty in the use of Simple Syllabus. They will help faculty to:
- Identify the purpose and benefits of using Simple Syllabus.
- Access and navigate the Simple Syllabus platform via D2L within their assigned banner courses.
- Edit their syllabi as needed, and preview how students will view it.
- Discover answers to common issues and explore the DLI website for additional assistance.
